THE AMERICUS WEEKLY I IMES-RECORDEK. THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 29 1910
GROUND IS LIKE FLINT
IN WORKING OF R04DS
Mules Stalled in Pulling
Huge Plows.
Work Now Carried On
Under Difficulties But
Large Force in Sum
ter Keeps Busy.
, Unless rain affords relief very soo i
Sumter's road wprkiug forces may
have to resort to the use of dynamite
Instead of mule migut, in tearing jj
the red sod In' th e .improved high
ways. Just now It Is like worklu
In a rook quarry, so unusually, hart
Is the ground.
Despite the obstacle Supt. Chrir
tlan is keeping bis large force of
county convicts busy.
He ha3 just completed tLte ‘'Bump-
head" road from Americus to ti e
Sumter and Schley county line, a dis
tance of six or eight miles, and will
now shift his zebras to the Ander-
•sonviUe road.
So diflicu.t was the work just com
piled due to the hardness of t re
ground, that very frequently a team
of six or eight big mule3 could scarce
ly pull the plows through the red
clay. Where there has been no ra.u
for many weeks tie ground is as hard
as adamant.
In resuming work upon the Andef-
sonvlile road, operations will oeg*.ri
at the other end In the direction of
Sweetwater creek, working south to
wards Americus.
The main convict force of probably
fifty or sixty men will push this
works towards completion before the
wet fall season sets in. This road
will be one of the most important of
the 125 mile system that makes Sum
ter’s roads the best of any county *n
the state.
This is the reputation Sumter enjoys
and it is worth untold thousands of
dollars to her.
Supt. Christian also bus a flying
squadron at work in the Seventeeniu
district, and is putting the roads there
in as good condition as can be done
now. t
Altogether the current year has
.been rich in'results In the way of
road building, and Sumter county now
possesses larger mileage and bett-i
roads than are found In any part of
the South. t This l8 saying a great den,
but absolute facts justllly. the state
ment.
