The Long residence is one of the
aristocratic old homes of Southern
Alabama and its hospitality is pro
verbial. And -upon this ocoasi ,1c

the inspiring scene of a real wedding.

Among the guests at the golden
wedding were two former brides
maids, Mrs. Benjamin Gardner, for
merly Miss Starke, and Mrs. T. B.
Niles, formerly Miss Anna Boykin.
And no greater homage was ever
paid wedding guests than «waa show
ered upon these silver-haired belles
of this long ago.

who blessed this union two survi e.
Mro. Thomaa Harrold, of Americas,
and Mrs. B. H. Palmer, of Corde.*.
Both daughters, with their two beau
tiful children each', brought cheer to
te hearts of their aged parents .ou
their fiftieth anniversary occasion.
Two other grandchildren, this Xlisses
Long, of Eufaula, were also among
the descendants attending the anni
versary.
Others present were Mr. and Mrs.
E. N. Brown, of Mexico City, and N.
W. L. Brown, of Marietta; Mi33 Lucy.
Hurt, of Atlanta; Mrs. XI. A. Jack-
son, of Montgomery; XIr. and Mrs.
Cornelius Reid, of Birmingham; Xiru.
Flournoy, of Columbus, and a host of
others from distant cities, all neir
relatives of the aged couple.
Captain S. H. Dent, of Eufaula, was
genial toastmaster, occupying a seal
of honor at the -‘bride’s table."
The home was beautiful in its floral
decorations, and many were the hand
some golden gifts which bore testi
mony of the love and veneration in
which the Umorees of the occasion
were held. One of these was a beau
tiful gold cross, set with pearls, the
gift of Jefferson Davis Chapter, C.
D. C.
The table decorations were In gold
en chrysanthemums and daisies cf
yellow hue, while missive brass cai-
dlesticks with yellow candles carried
- out effectively the color motif. The
present Long home Is the former res
idence of XIr. Long’s father, and was
1 erected in 1856.

faithful old slave who, as the fam
ily seamstress of the sixties helped
make tbe wedding gown of her beiu-
tiful tyoung mistress, a half century
agone, and whose love for her had
waxed strong In the flight of time.
All of the Americus party, with the
exception of Xlrs. Harrold, have re
turned Dome, she remaining through
the week with her aged parents,
The visitors were welcomed
Americus at 2 o’clock yesterday af
ternoon at Pythian Castle, where the
convocation was called to order by
Division Deputy Grand Master Frank
G. Olver, of Americus.
Response upon behalf of the vis t-
ors was made by several of their rep
resentatives, and the business ses
sion was formally declared open.
The afternoon session -was consum
ed in hearing reports of .representa
tives, communications and unflnis.i-
ed business, with short talks upon the
good of the order and the exemp l-
fleatioxi of tide secret work of the
I. O. O. F.
The social session was held last
night at the armory, consisting of
very pleasing program of addresses
and music. Prominent among the
s|>eakers, whose wit and eloquence
delighted the -assemblage was the
gifted Rev. Ashby XI. Jones, of Au
gusta.
Col. L. J. Blalock, upon behalf of
the Americus lodge, spoke at length
upon Odd Fellowship and the splei-
did work accomplished by that great
benevolent order.
A select reading by Xlrs. XV. XV. Rob
erts was an Interesting feature of
the program last evening.
During the two hours of the social
session splendid music was rendered
by the Americus orchestra, while
9:30 the assemblage partook of
splendid barbecue luncheon, with
other refreshments, served by the
lodge here.
The occasion was a splendid suc
cess and thoroughly enjoyed by the
large number in attendance.

Newport, R. I., October 18.—One of
tbe oldest business and provision
stands of Newport closed its doors

H. King, a former resident of Amer
icus, and well remembered here by
many older citizens. General King,
who joined the Confederate army :
private, but rose to the rank of act
ing major-general, died at his home
la Sulphur Springs Thursday. Gen
eral King was a well known politi
cian and lawyer, and served for ten
years as adjutant general of the state
He was 71 years old and a native <f
Georgia.
