Until quite recently there was prob
ably not a county, road in all Sumter
that had a gride po3t on It. Ti-vj way
farer coming to a junction of roalu
aad to use his sense of intuition. If he
had any, as to which one to take.
Sometimes he took tl>e rlg~t one and
somctlanes he abused the county for
not labeling its highways.
But this unsath'factony condition i»

Tills Is in keeping with trie Georgia
law on the subject-which says:
“Overseers s-'all measure all that
part of the roads to which they may
be appointed, beginning at the court-
bouse, and at the end of each mile
shall cot up a past or a mark In some
conspicuous place wl.ic;' shall desig
nate the number of miles from thenoe
to the courthottae.
“They Shall at the fork of each

tial and conspicuous manner, a board
or other mark designating ^hereon the
mo3t public place to which each road
directs, and If any road is altered so
as to make the fork at some oth
place, or as not to make necessary
sign boards, they shall 'he removed.'
When the duties of road overseers
have fallen on the shoulders of county
“Commissioners of Roads and Reve
nues,’’ as In Sumter, this duty of mark
ing the public highways Is obligato - y
upon them.
We recognize our duty In this re
spect,” said Chairman Sheffield yes
terday, “and we hqve begun to meet I!.
By degrees we will erect suhstantl ll
sign posts at all the leading cross
roads, and eventually every cross ro.vl
point In Sumter county will bo prop

the county's general progressive po'•
Icy. With good roads there comes In
creased travel and Increased travel
makes It more than ever necessary to
safeguard public Interests by mark

past, but It will not be such in this
county at least hereafter.”

camps be prolonged by the-admission
into them a3 honorary members, of the
sans of veterans.
Fortf-flve years have passed since
the war closed and the Inevitable dis
solution of the camp3 cannot Ihe de
ferred many years unless some suc.J
policy as this Is pursued. Each year
finds a considerable decrease In the
membership of the camps. Sumter
camp In the past year or two has lout
some of Its most enthusiastic mem
bers. Death Is making heavy inroads
on the membership and the roll call
Is getting pitifully smaller every
twelve months.
It Is felt that It Is not well that
the camps should be dissolved in this
way within the next few years. Those
who survive another five or ten years
will, In the course of nature, be very
old and decrepit men, unable to keop
up meetings, unable, except In rare
instances, to attend re-unions. 'It is
their earnest desire that the' camp
fires be kept lighted, that the precious
memories and records of each camp
be protected and preserved, and the
only solution of this. It Is pointed out,
lies In the admission of the sons of
vets as honorary < members, to take
up the work'and carry on the camps
at least for several decades to pome.
The proposition seems to be meet
ing with an erfiliuslastio favor. At the
next general gathering of the vets
of the South the organic law of the
association may be altered so as to
permit of this. If this is done Sum
ter camp 'will not pass into a matter
of memory, but will ho kept alive by
the sons of the present members and
those who have passed away.

Illustrating the prosperity of South
west Georgia in the iye:irs of thirteen
fourteen and fifteen cents cotton, comes
this story from one of the towns in
this section of the state.
A tall and lanky farmer saunte
ed into one of the village banks and
stood resting his elbows on the shelf
at the cashier’s'.’window.
"Well, Sam,” said the cashier,
what can we do for you—If you need
taw hundred dollars I guess we'll
try and .let you havo It—eight pi
cent.”
“No, Bill; I don’t want any money.
"Well—?”
Scm glanced furtively about t.ie
bank, leinc-J over and said In a low
voice:
“Fact is, Bill. I’ve been keeping
ni/ money an n-d the house and I've
got a leetlo more than 'I want :o
keep there." ,
Sam seemed .bashful; the words
wouldn't come.
‘Well—?” said the cashier.
Well, ti» fact Is Bill, I’ve got here
in this pockelbook a leetlo over $8,-
000. And—and—and—I jest thought
I'd call here and auk you folks what
you’d charge me to take care of It
for me?” '
Then Sam drew from his pocket an
ancient pocketbook and counted out
the bills—the -proceeds of two cotton
crops.
