CONVICTS ARE BUSY IN '• CUTTING DOWN GRADE Muckalee HRI Will Shortly Be Obliterated. Muckalee hill, the Chinese wall that shuts In Americus to the westward, Is being, rapidly reduced under the constant onslaught of Supt. Christ ian's striped army, and ere long will be reduced to the required grade. For nearly a century Muckalee 1.411 has proved an Insurmountable .barrier in the march of progress', and two of Sumter's finest roads,, those to Plains and Smlthvllle, are still marred by Its presence. The almost mountain, like hill Is being out away now, how ever, and like other steep Inclines along Sumter’s good roads it will soon bo wiped out 'altogether. By cutting off the top of the hill and filling In the space between the base thereof and the first bridge over Muckalee creek, the hill will be reduced almost to a level,, and travel over It to tb other towns in that direction thus facilitated. A Generous and Charitable Wish. "I wish all might know of the bene fit I received from your Foley's Kin ney Remedy," says I. N. Regan, Far mer, Mo. He was cordially greet ed here yesterday by many of the older citizens, this being his .first visit to Amerloas In fifty years. Forced to Leave Home. ’t miss this great event. Sixty dollars per acre, It was stated yesterday, had been offered for a pret ty farm situated three or four mil out of Americus on one of Sumter good roads, and the offer declined, fact, it is a matter of doubt H much greater price would prove i tractive to the owner. Several sales of lands near Ameri- cus have been made within the week and in every instance the price pod reflected Increasing value. From a low level range two or three years ago, choice lands in Sumter have advanced to the present level of JdO to $50 per acre, the price being gov erned by location' and soil -fertility, and by general environment. •A prospective buyer from an ad Joining state lias been in Americus for a wijck with the desire to purchase large farm, but owing to existing conditions he purchased in an adjotfi- lng county, although be bad strong preference for Sumter where others from his state Dave purchased lands. According to his statement several owners of farms here 'have listed bhejr property for sale and have since ad vanced prices considerably beyond the advertised figures, ’’’Ms, he ways, has tendency to cbokc off prospective buyers. Several farms here were shown him but none of these, at prices quoted, seemed desirable. His statement possibly may' be ov erdrawn to an extent, but It is true that the demand for well improved farms in Sumter, and more especial' ly those situated upon the beautifully graded county, roads, has bad tile ef fect of advancing values very mate rially. ■ But there are yet many desirable places here to be had at very reason able prices, despite the fact that the of lands here recently baa gone well above the (half million dollar mark In the aggregate.
