any one of them being invited to the
proposed conference.
Gome of the Democrats are pointing
out that at least three of these—WII
son. Harmon and Dlx—will figure as
canfildates in the Democratic conven
tion cf 1312. The argument Is made
that should they be invited to a gen
eral conference to map ont the future
of the party they might quarrel over
their personal policies and put the
party ln a disagreeable light.
Another Objection, equally serious
la the opinion of the Democrats,
that there would be a question of pro
priety In the offering of advice by
State olficers to the great Federal
body. Congress. Democrats In Con
gress hold that they were elected by
the people to decide on legislation, and
that no slvlce la needed from the lead
ers In the various I9tates.
The men who are holding ont for a
general conference assert that this :s
o no Hme for such splitting of hairs.
The main thing Is to win the Presi
dency In 1312. The wty to win it is
to avoid mlsUkes from now nntll then.
The way to avoid mistakes Is for ev
erybody to get together and decide on
a definite series of motives.
Most of the Democrats agree that
there should be conference* among
the House and Senate members, op
position being centerel merely on the
proposition to bring the presidential
candidates Into the happy congress
ional fzznlly.

for the first time in Ofty yeans there is
a coherent democratic party which 1s
sobered by victory and responsibility.
Even six months ago democratic
victory seemed to promlee nothing bet
ter thin republican defeat and a pop
ular rebuke of the party in power. But
