Sumter county has one farmer who
drags his road regularly and keeps it
in condition. He is the only
though, who is known to do it. and
to profit by the oiler of practical
co-operation in road-making that came
from the county commissioners some
time ago.
Of course it will be many years
before it will be possible for all the
roads of Sumter county to be made
first class. The main highways are
being improved as rapidly as possible,
but the local or neighborhood public
roads can only be kept in the ordi
nary condition that has marked them
for so many years. If, though, the
farmers of a neighborhood w'ould
co-operate with the county much
greater progress would be made in the
re-construction of such minor high
ways and the interests of the farmers
promoted thereby.
When the county offered to put as
many men and mules on one of their
small roads as the farmers living there
would do Mr. H. S. Williams, down in
the southeastern corner of the new
16th, accepted the proposition and met
the county in good faith. As a result
two miles of road there was much
bettered in condition. tA drag was
left by the county for use in keeping
the road in shape and ever since then
Mr. Williams has gone over the road
periodically.
To drag the entire road costs Mr.
Williams only about thirty cents actual
cash. He takes a day when his mules
can be spared and puts a negro to
work on the road with the drag. As
a result the road to his home is kept
clear irom bumps and hollows and
rubbish. He is well satisfied with the
results of his efforts, as other farmers
would be if they would pursue a sim
ilar course.
This method of co-operation is now
being used on an ever-increasing scale
in many states. Out In Iowa the other
day a highway many miles long was
built by ten thousand farmers who
turned out with their teams and men
and under the direction of skilled road
builders constructed a broad, straight
highway half way across the state.
This is merely an illustration of the
spirit that has developed in purely
agricultural sections In the W'est where
It is appreciated that good roads are
the greatest agents available for the
promotion of farming Interests.

Waynesboro, Ga., January 13.—
When the home of James W. Chance
was destroyed here this morning a
piano saved from the fire was set
down In front of the home of Waited
Hatcher, a rural nail carrier.
The Hatcher children, playing near
it were caught beneath it when sud
denly it tipped over nnd fell, killing
one of them aud seriously injuring
another.
Washington, January 13.—The final
settlement of the row over the mem
bership of the Ways and Means com
mittee and the assurance given tin
Georgia members that Mr. Brantley
nill be retained on that committee, de
spite his views on raw materials,
means that Mr Brantley will have t»
give up the judicivy committee.
The judiciary committee berth. ap
peals especially to Mr. Brantley, and
its work is more congenial to him but
under all the circumstances he feels
that he should make the sacrifice of
his personal inclinations and remain
on Ways and Means. This committ-
will undoubtedly be given authority to
select the other committees of the
house.
Representative Roddenberry, of the
Second Georgia district, will be urged
for the Judiciary committee to sue

retires on March 4th.
If the Rules committee is elected by
the caucus on the 19th, Mr. Hardwick
will undoubtedly be selected fo
