CITE OP STETTIN
WASHINGTON, D. C., August 27
"In few cities of the German empire
would economic unrest and Industrial
disturbances have a more profound ef
fect upon the Kaiser’s prosecution of
the war than in Stettin, where serious
food riots are reported to have occur
red recently," says a war geography
bulletin, issued today from the Wash
ington headquarters of the National
headquarters of the National Geo
graphic society,
"It is in a suburb of Stettin that the
great Vulcan shipyards are locate!
where so many of the German war
ships arc built. Even In peace times
the Vulcan works, covering more than
70 acres, employed 8,000 men and this
number has, of course, been vastly
augmented since the Prussians began
with feverish haste to multiply ths
units of their sinister submarine
fleets.
"Stettin’s importance to German
arms does not end with its shipbuilding
activities, however. Locomotives, boil
ers and machinery of various kinds
are manufactured here while the cloth
ing mills, employing more than 10,000
men, women and children are proba
bly mobilised at this time fort he pro
duction of uniforms for the Prussian
soldiers.
"Stettin Is 84 miles by rail north-
cast of Berlin. It has a population
of 235,000 and is built on both banks
of the river Oder, about 17 miles
above its entrance into the Stettiner
Half, a land-locked arm of the Bal
tic. Vessels drawing as much as
feet of water can discharge their car
goes here, especially in tho new Free
harbor, adjacent to the suburb of Las-
tadie, with quays having a total
length of more than 14,000 feet. Next
p> Hamburg and Bremerhaven. more
ships annually entered and cleared
from Stettin before the war than at
any other port In Germany. The city
may be considered the seaport for Ber
lin. It is the capital and principal
city of the province of Pomerania.
"The authentic history of Stettia
dates from the 12th century when it
was known as Stedyn. For several
hundred years it beloged to the Dukes
of Pomerania, one of whom granted It
municipal right! as early as the mid
dle of the 13th century. The line ol
Dukes became extinct in 1637, and It
years later the town became a Swed
ish possession. It was not until the
following century (1720) that It was
allotted to Prussia by the treaty of
Stockholm. Frederick the Great great
ly strengthened its fortifications, but
these did not prevent Its surrender to
the French without a struggle in 1806
Seven years later it was returned to
Prussia. The city’s defenses were
rased in 1874, thereby greatly facili
tating its industrial expansion.
"Stettin might be likened to Hart
ford, Conn., for it is the home olfice
o'many of the biggest Insurance com
panies of tho German empire.
"Although other cities have tried to
rrb it of the distinction, Stettin may
rightly claim the honor of being the
birthplace of one of the greater wo
men of history, Catherine II. of Rus-
A Heinie on Barbarism
In a recent number of the “Smart
Set,” a moribund periodical which
has grown so dull that it can’t even
make vice attractive, appears an arti
cle under a title in dog-Latin on th-
general subject of the Ethiop and the
difficulty of changing his skin.
The main idea—so far as there is
one—buried under a cloud of pidgin
English which masquerades as ‘smart ’
and piquant, is that the negro has out
stripped the whites in cultural and
material development and that a race
war looms Just over the hill which is
going to make the war of the Titans
look like a flat fight.
But the piece de resistance—if we
may trench upon humor from the mis-
cegenous marriage of Latin and French
in such expressions as “the Homo
or picture or poem or scientific dis
covery or political or philosophical
idea or other sound contribution to hu
man advancement.”
Now Heinie Mencken’s only honest
title to fame is the claim that he un
derstands the German philosopher,
Nietzsche—when Nietzsche didn’t even
claim to understand himself. For ten
years he has never been able to write
cn anything from the beauties of Mar
tin Tupper’s “Proverbial Philosophy”
the divine attributes of Buddha,
without dragging in the name of the
lunatic of Naumburg. On this and his
glorifications of sauer-kr&ut rest his-
more substantial claims to immortal
ity.
If a poem or a scientific discovery
w'ere to come out of Georgia it would
never find lodgment in the Mazurian

ceases to be amuqsing and merely be
come ludicrous, after the fashion of a
hired mourner who gets lit-up at the

For young Heinie, you see, is not a
