RICHMOND COUNTY REGISTRA¬
TION LIST TEEMED WIEH
FRAUD.
Seeing mat v statements of the excell¬
ence with vfltich the registrars purged
the list of voters of Richmond county
of all illegal names, accompanied b>
t | ie statement that everything was car¬
tm to tlm satisfaction of Mr. Har
graves the lopulist. representative of
tlie boa rtf, Und l^iowini* that flit* peo
pie of the Bute would be interested in
knowing tin accuniey of these
tin nts, a Tn unit! reporter calle.d on
*'* r - Uargi G s ami interviewed him
relative to t esc published statcineuts.
Mr. Hargraves said that in signing
the regRliai 1011 lisis of this county he
did not, nor did he inti nd to, say 11
was am thing likt; cicar of illegal regis¬
trations, 01 that he apptoved n in any
maimer.
He said Hint at first he refused to sign
the list, but that the other two regis¬
trars showed him by the formal affida¬
vit attached to it that he did not by his
signature Say ;? that it was free of fraud,
but it ivas mere matter of fotm which
could not he of any moment, either one
way or the other.
Mi. Hargrave further stated that, (he
list was, in ins judgment, teeming with
illegal names and that the actions of
bis co-laborCrs left him no oilier con¬
clusion, but that they proceeded from
the start iff an obstructive course in
order thatgfvhen the list of fraudulent
registriituMS presented by a committee
of citizens#: "pis reached, there would
not bff^Hhgh time remaining to give
them ah impair >1 and complete consid¬
eration.
Mr. Hargraves also states that Mr.
Murphey aud others who investigated
the names presented to the Board,
made a mis'.ike by failing to have legal
counsel to a sits t, and says the demo¬
crats had a legal representative on Ihe
board,as \v*J as the assistance of a good
many of flit court officials of the conn
ty.
Mr. Uaigntves said that the reason
he said noihiug was because he soon
saw that . .-wiffd it- n ’.’seiass waste of
time and expenditure and that he was
nothing more or less than a figurehead,
created by law.
The entire interview went to refute
the statement sent forth to the world
that everything was lovely in Rich¬
mond county, and met with his appro¬
val.
Mr. II grave is conscious of the
fact that the list was not properly
purged and that-from the star!, there
was no intention on the part of the
controlling faction of this county, to
purify it.—Augusta Tribune.
