Al’ THOMSON, LAST FRIDAY, They Gathered by Ilumlreds ami by Thousands. THE GREAT COMMON l'EOPLE OF THE TENTH ASSEMBLE TO EON OR AND TO IIE VR THE MATCH. LESS WATSON, The morning of tlu 20th. of October dawned gray and chilly over the Tenth t oil 'Sessional district of Georgia. Yet, had the sun broken through the clouds he would have found at dawn S n? And would not the populists he there en m isse. From the evening of the 18th. until noon of the 20 th. they who observed at Thomson must have continually said: Theycomc! Theyconic! Many from adjoining counties came in buggies and wagon*, horse back and afoot, and camped at night near the scene of the great rally. By light on the following morning the stream of the evening before had swollen into a mighty river of humanity that poured itse'f into, upon and around the town. T hoy came by the train load, by the wagon load, by the buggy load. They eame, glad that they.wore to hear one whom they loved and admired, and who in return loved and admired them. But over theii hopes and their delight at the prospect of a grand suc¬ cessful rally, and of fraternal joy in the day at hand was cast a heavy cloud of sadness, A brother of Mr. Watson had died a sad death recently and the burial had taken place only a day before- The heart of the man, to whom all looked with nearly cvdldlike faith, was crushed by sorrow. A id th e hear t of fhfi multi tudewas slirredin sorrowful svmpathv. Ere this sad news the clnhy gloom oi the morning had not entered the hearts of the people, but with it came into their souls a reflection of the cloudy dawn and they gathered in groups to speak their regrets, or in more elo¬ quent silence show the deep sympathy they felt. The heat t of the chief was sad, and the heart of his people was sorrowful. The sou! of the leader was smitten w th grief, and the spirit of the people foil the crushing weight of ihe blow. Yet, it is so decreed that however downcast the mind may be for a while it must ere long rally to th: ever ring ing call of the present and with the ri-. peuing of the morning came that fee! ing, which interpreted means; “The dead are at rest. The living must live on.” About 9 o’clock the morning took on t more cheerful cast and the broken clouds gave promise of a clear sky ere noon. About 10 o’clock thy crowd had assembled at the stand and Maj. Me. Gregor made the opening remarks; sta¬ ting that the speech M r. Watson was to have deliverd would be puplished in the People’s Party Paper next month, Another remark made was that he could show proof positive that Mr. Watson could honorably le v# made $5,000 during the time lie was speak all over Georgia at Lis own expanse, Shortly afterwards Hon. Quickened by the ex perienceof the hour; his soul newlv alive to the perils of the day he spoke with peculiar strength and feeling, and with an earnestness that was burning.
