Smallness Extraordinary.
At the London fair of 1745 William
Mossman, a jeweler, exhibited a shell
of a common Barcelona nut contain¬
ing a tea table, tea board, a dozen
'-•ups and saucers, a sugar dish, a bot¬
tle, a funnel, 15 driukiug cups, 5
punch bowls, 10 rummers, a pestle and
mortar and two sets of ninepins, all
of polished ivory. Boverick, a rival
tradesman, soon afterward outdid the
genius of his fellow craftsman. This
last named artist exhibited the half
of a common cherry stone, from
which he would take u table, 12
chairs with skeleton backs, a mirror
neatly framed, two dozen soup plates, fi
saucers, 12 spoons and a dozen kuvies
and forks, 2 salt cups and figures of
lady and gentleman, whom he seated
at the table.
Doyle, the antiquarian, says: “This
same Boverick also made an ivory cam
cl, perfect in uli its parts, so small
that it could easily be passed through
the. eye of a common sewing needle;
also six pairs of scissors so small that
they could all be hidden under the.
wiug of a fly, aud a gold chain of 200
links, to which a miniature padlock and
key were welded, yet all were of such
minute dimensions that upon being at¬
tached to a dea the insect could easily
drag them to and fro across a pane
■f glass.”— St. flouts Republic.

A subject which will receive some
consideration at the hands of the corn
mittee on appropriations at tliisscs
sion of the house, is embodied in the
bill introduced by Representative Say
chairman, entitled a bill “to
repeal certain laws relating to pernta
uent and indefinite appropriations.”
Bills having this object in view have
appeared perennially during the past
seven years, but for various reasons
they have failed of enactment, The
object of repealing these permanent
appropriations and having congress
pass upon the matters covered by them
each year is that it w ill conduce to a
more thorough and careful examina¬
tion of terms of appropriation than is
obtained under the present system by
which the recounts art credited and
passed upon by the accounting officers,
and where no opportunity is left for
scrutiny by congressional committees.
