THE BOVLF1R EXPLOSION.
The Official Report Shows That It
Could Not Have Been Avoided.
(Copyright 1894 by the Southern Asso¬
ciated Pr£s.)
Berlin, Feb. 17.—The war ship Bran
denburg has been towed into the harbor,
and this morning her chief engineer
was found decJ on board. The Reichan
zeiger published the official account of
the explosion. It says that the war ship
was outside the harbor and that all
her twelve boilers were being used.
The engine’s indicator showed that about
7.300 horse power was being used.
Therefore, it is claimed, there was no
forced draught, as under forced draught
over 10,000 horse power would have
been developed. The accident happened
through the breaking of the connecting
rod for turning on and off the steam
from the starboard engine, The full
head from all the boilers was thus con¬
fined in the main steana pipe, which was
blown to pieces and the super-heated
vapor found free ingress into the engine
room. which was Allied with people,
The steam spread instantaneously
throughout the room, scalding every oc¬
cupant and penetrating through the door
leading to port engine room and thence
through the stair ways into the upper
n K>ma whore the electrical machinery,
distributing apparatus and stores w*ere
situated. Almost every person at work
in the rooms must have met with in¬
stant death. Such accidents happen in

subjects. . Since such high sh-am pres

and it is gratifying to learn that ir

the Admiral In command of the squad¬
