A ROUSING MEETING
In Old McDuffie
Saturday.
Hon. Tiros. E. Batson the Orator of
The Occasion.
Our friends in McDuffie realize that
the time is drawing near for a great
political light and are preparing for it.
At a called Mass meeting last Sat¬
urday, which we had the pleasure of
attending, ttie May convention. delegates weie Other elected business to
was transacted, but the chief altrac -
tioa of the occasion was au address by
Hon, T. F, IP,
The speaker opened by explaining
the progr as of the contest for the seat
of J. C. O. Black. He explained many
tilings in this line which the moss
backs bave construed in every imag
inpabie way. First: There never was
only seven of eight hundred dollars
raised. (Tlie “bob-tails” have had it
every amount from £2000 up.) Seco .d:
This small amout lias been made to go
as tar as humanpower was ableto make
it. gf>- It was used by the lawyers in
getting up evidence, lor railroad fare
etc. Enough evidenne was obtained of
the fraudulent methods used in Rich¬
mond county in the election to Con
vince the democrats that it would be
bad pilicyto give the case a hearing.
Conse piently it has’iit yet been
brought to trial though every influ¬
ence that the populists could exert,
brwigiff •g«4P' hearirig.
Mr. Watson tliein took up r lie
Popuiist platform aud explained each
plank seperately. The argument us¬
ed was the tnort plainest an i convin¬
cing that it seemed possi »le for man to
use. It looked almost impossible for
a mossbacK to listen to such a speech
and uo’ be converted, surely it whs
nothing but prejudice or pars mil
gain th it keeps tliem out.
Mt. Watson’s touching allusions to
“Gen John B” and other > of toe
soap-grease crowd were side-splitting
in the extreme.
Tlie m-eting was held at tiie
court house in Thomson. Although
it had no.abeen advertised ex ensiv -ly
enough populist were present to till
