BURIED IN A WELl.
Curbing Fell Down and Earth Caved
in on Him.
Greenesboro, Ga„ April 9.—(Sp 'C
ial.)—Ilenry Brown, a colored well
digger. was buried alive on tlie place
of Mr. B. F, Mills, near this city, last
Saturday evenig just before dark.
Brown was cleaning out a well on
Mr. Mill’s place and was also engaged
ji putting in new curbing. The well
was about eighty feet deep. Brown
was in th* bottom at work when part
of <he curbing gave wav and fell, bury¬
ing him beneath it. A great part of
the dirt, per haps fifteen or twenty feet,
also caved in and fell on him. The
men working with him gave the alarm
and a great crowd gathered and tffoits
were made to get him out all Saturday
night, and yesterd *y, but the well seem
ed to be of a kind of quick sand, and
has been caving rapidly, so that the
effort* to regain his body have been
futile, it being dangerous to work in
t he well. Brown must h*ve been iu
tantly killed as no sounds or cries were
head from him after the curbing fell on

To the A uvoCATB- ItKMocita'r
Last Sul unlay night at 1 o'clock and 20
minutes sun llnie,al>enuUfn! meteor might
have been seen hy ail oosurveis, at least in
till* section.
Its first apiieaiance, to the Writer, who
wi'i at Union Point, was alumt S degree*
East of the Zenith and its course was due
East.
Its velocity was very great. Its height
was equal to that of tile full moon of a
clear night and lasted five *r tlx seconds
It, perhaps, wasattlie height of sixty or
seventy lull s when the resisteuee of our
atmosphere was sufficient to make it vis,
I tile.
There was no explosion so far as the
writer knows. It was also seen at ( raw
fordvllle liy tlie editor of this papef its
direc’loii there was due East. No doubt
It was also seen in Augusta, and perhaps
we may hear from it there.
It would l>e interesting and perhaps
lnstmctiveto know tlie position of tin*
meteor at the several places where it
was visible at th* zenith and from
these several accounts it may be po*~
uihie to calculate its course, intensity
size, weight, distance traveled aud also
its velocity.
Prof. Newton of Yale College gives
some very interesting calculations
concerning a meteor seen the 20th of
last January. The ustiira) velocity of
that one, he tell* us, was over sixteen
unleg a second and this velocity was
increased hy the earth’s attraction t*
shout eighteen miles a second: The
(timing of these Indies is so sudden
and their stay so short that hut little
is as yet known about them.
