mSTAfffL'E'rO GIVE COTTON.
What is the proper distance M., Trickum. to give
cotton? H. A.
Mr. David Dickson, Georgia’s great
cotton planter, was of the opinion that
cotton needed distance only one way. If
the rows were wide, it could be crowded
■»«»«.-.«.n„
versal rule, however, can be given and
much depends upon th* fertility of th*
■oil and the rain supply. Thin planting
CAD better withstand a drought. On
fairly rich land properly fertilized rows
four feet apart with plants from one to
two feet is about tbe proper distance.
When great distance , ,s giveD . ear , y
platting u desirable, as the crop on ac
count of the large weed will iiuit later
in the season and therefore be more sub
ject to damage from frost. Tbe distance
will alec on this account be found to
govern largely the yield from different
pickings. When the planting is thick
the yield from the first pickings will be
heavy and the late light, vhile the re¬
verse is true when tbe planting ia thin.

J. J. M. I., Buchanan.
The bisnlphlde of carbon has been
very highly recommended for tbe de¬

we take the following by Mr. H. E.
Weed, of the Agricultural college of
Mississippi, from The bouthem Planter:
In the February number of The
Planter is an article under the above
head, which treats of the method of de¬
stroying weevils by tneaps of bisulphide
of carton. The article in qneation, how¬
ever, hardly givea the liest method of
the application of the bisulphide, nor
where best obtained. The bisulphide is
very useful as a remedy for any insect*
w hlch may work within stored seed* or
gram of any kind It .. tost applied to
the gram by Biinply pouring a quantity
over the top of the grain to be treated,
When corn is harvested it shonld to
carefally examined for the gram insect*,
and if they are present, as they general
b are, tbe corn should receive treat
ment by meaa* of tbe u„i„no blaulphids rews
dy. It is liest to have a tight ton for
this treatment, but this item is not es
aential to success, although the tlghtar
the bin the lew) amount of bumlpkide It
will take for the treatment. In the case
of corn, also, if it is husked it will take
th « bisulphide for the treatmenL
