Would yon advise spreading manure hauled
on bind in fall an 1 winter as
from the stable, or covering the heap
ami spreading in the Is 0. spriug? Flutonia.
Like a groat many questions of agri¬
culture, tills question shows the neces¬
sity of close study i a tlio part of the
farmer. The moth 1 best adapted to
Homo soils and purpi nan is not best for
other admitted soils fact and that other iijiruyard (purposes. manure It is an in
an open lot will, in j few months, lore
much of its valuabl • salts, leaving little
of value except the s| raw and uadocom
poseil orgauio matte r. Tills loss takes
place principally by leaching, though a
portion of tlio voliiile matter is evap¬
orated by tho wind i.ndsuu. It is evi¬
dent, therefore, that the sooner tlio ma¬
nure is placed on the land the better, in
many cases, as nothing is lost by leach¬
ing; al! there is of yalue being carried
into the soil. Here it is, however, that
the farmer can exorcise his judgment as
to the retentive powers and character of
his soil. It being much better to apply
early on the retentive soils we have
mentioned, as they will hold the matter
of value much better than the compost
heap. These soils are clay soils which
are so tenacious of ammonia and other
salts, that fresh manure spread
on them would losa little except car¬
bonic acid gas and water. On the other
band, early applications would not Imj
oroisir on silicioas sdls, as the very so
lnble salts would 1«) leached by the rains
through the soils to a depth to which
‘he rootlets of the crop would not reach.
In such cases a carclutly managed <x,m
post heap, with alatj: application, would
afford more plant i'L si than when ap
plied on being haul* d from ^he arable.
We take thin oce wion to call atten¬
tion to the nece?»ii! ' of Having stable
manure and studyi;<< its profxir applica
tion if we desire to succeed. In Eug
j an ,\ the land is cmtinaally enriched
animals on oil cake, rich in
n it r og".nott» matter thus utilizing tlie
fat properties of Am cako as animal
food, and at tho sai.o time losing little
by careful saving of its fertilizing prop¬
erties.
The farmer sliml} also tear in mind
that the urine of ie anirnals e/m tain h
more of the element, jn of plant food than
^oppin^, »d p^vuled, the stable an afl

be properly saved.
