CRAWFORDVILLE. GA.. FRIDAY SEPTEMHER 2 , 1904
Grand Jury
Presentments,
» .
We, the grand jurors, chosen
for August term of Superior
court ot Taliaferro «o.unty, 1904,
submit the following general
presentments;
Through committtees appoint¬
ed from thjs body, we have ex
amined the books of the various
county officers, as well as could
be done with the limited time
allowed and can but corroborate
the report of the special com¬
mittee, appointed at the last
term of court, whose report,says
"all books are neatly and cor
rectiy kept, rejecting much
credit upon these worthy offi ¬
cials,’’
We find the books of the jus¬
tices of the peace correctly
! kept.
We find the court house in
fairly good condition, except as
to its keepings. We find the.
outside doors are seldom, if
ever, closed at night, which'
leaves all halls and stairways
the county commissioners require
the county officers, who have use
, 1hp 10SL - 01 nr put ;v*ito ate, as n Wll well as
| public business, free of rent, to
see ”* the j ^outside doors i. '. re ‘ '
•
j closed and locked every night.
There are some small cracks in
: wa n B that may not be serious
at present, but should be noticed
in time to save the building from
danger. We recommend, as has
n
insiCle • • ^ hlinnss blinas he be rda^pd placed nt
at west wool
window in grand jury room. We
find the deck roof of standing
j - and soldered tin- needs ,
| seam a
coat to stop
the rust, the cost of which would
be but a small amount.
We find the jail in very good
shape, both as to cleanliness and
safety.
The roads of the county are
being worked by the new sys¬
tem, and we feel encouraged to
believe that we will soon have
excellent roads. We take
this occasion to express our ap¬
preciation and gratitude to Mr,
C. W. Caldwell for his efficient
and gratuitous services given to
this work. Much work is yet
needed in some portions of the
county, and we trust all roads
will soon be attended to.
We find the office of notary
public vacant in the 601st dis¬
trict, and recommend the ap¬
pointment of T. J. Evans to
same.
We recomend that and
bailiffs receive £1.50 per day
their services, aud clerk of the
grand jury $2 per day.
We herewith submit tlm treas¬
urers’ report, jit appears else
where.]
We appoint as special com¬
mittee on county officers’ books
to rep- rt at the next grand jury:
W. C. Chapman, .John F. Holden
! and Wm, L. Kendrick.
J We recommend that the mem-;
j j her from this requested county, in to the intro- leg
isiature, be
jduceabill in the next general;
! assembly requiring that all taxes j
(collected in the county for all |
county purposes, be placed with j
1 a depository to be selected by 1
the county commissioners;
depository, or officer of said de
pository, be required to make a
good ohiuurjTofWd aud sufficient cjudyUor bond to
security of said money, and
depository or bonded'bauk
shall be required to make,
each succeeding grand jury
full and complete report of
money collected with vouchers
for same when paid out aud
that said bank or bonded officer
of said depository shall be
known as the depository of all
the taxes of the county, subject
j to the warrant or checks of said
j county officers commissioners of the otherwise or other
county
authorized to pay out such
money and that said de¬
pository shall receive and
pay out such money without re¬
ceiving any commission on
same, and further that the office
of county treasurer of Taliaferro
county be abo.lshe.d ; provided,
however, this recommendation
shall ‘ be endorsed and
recom¬
mended by the grand jury to
succeed during February term
of court
We further recommend that a
county court for Taliaferro
county be established, under the
general law of this state estab
lishing county o urt .
We further recommend that
the judge of the said county
court shall receive a salary of
one hundred and fifty dollars per
annum, for .which sum he 0^0 shall
■ Cm';-, »
county court, so established, and
also shall perform all clerical
work therewith attached.
We further recommend that
the solicitor of said county court
shall receive a salary of one hun¬
dred and fifty dollars per annum,
for which sum he shall perform
upon
the solicitor of said county
court ' _
I» returning these general pro
sentments, we heartily and sin¬
cerely return our thanks to his
honor, Judge Horace M. Holden,
for his able charge and impar¬
tial manner in discharging his
duties apon the bench and trust
that he may be spared a long and
happy life.
We also return our thanks to
Solicitor - General David W.

our body, and recognize in him
