According to a Washington dispatch,
Senator Warren reported the omnibus
claims bill from the senate claims

The Ware county commissioners
have re-elected Mr. Roberts overseer
of public road work during the year
1905. Since the goad-road system was
adopted in Ware county, about two
years ago, about 40 mils of roads
have been constructed by the county
convict, gang, and the system
is proving a great success.

Another Legislative Error.
Another glaring error, committed by
the last legislature, has just come to
light, and like the judges’ salary bill
where the salaries of the judges were
r used, but no appropriation made for
the in-crease. It is a bill providing

the purpose.
And the prison eommissim bus re¬
fused to take 'charge of such convicts
for the reason that there is no money
in the treasury to pay out for such
work as the legislature wants done.
Although the general assembly made
tbis provision it failed to provide the
coin with which to do it, and it can
not be done, or at least it will not
he done until the money is forthcom¬
ing - .

Favors Compursory Vaccination.
At its annual meeting held in At¬
lanta the past week the state board
of health came out strongly and em¬
phatically in favor of compulsory vac¬
cination, and it was determined that
its efforts should bo toward securing
the passage of a general state law by
which compulsory vaccination may be
enforced wherever and whenever it is
necessary for the purpose of prevent
i n g and of stamping out smallpox

The mail car of train 39 of the At¬
lantic Coast Line ?as robbed of twen¬
ty registered packages just outside of
Montgomery, Ala . Saturday night.
Mail Clerk Eug- ae Hester was shot
in the hand and minfullv hurt. The
robber was a wbt e man. Ho wore
a mask made of handkerchief

While busy at work in his car Hes¬
ter heard a man ?Av. ‘‘Hold up your
hands.” He turned to look at the
speaker, when the car lurched arid the
robber stumbled.
Before he could recover his bal¬
ance Hester jumped on him and a des¬
perate hand-to-hand struggle ensued.
At. last the robber succeeded in firing
his pistol, and the shot went through
Hester's hand. Hester was forced to
relax his hold.
“Don’t shoot any more,” he said, “I
am shot now ” The robber then rush
ed to the table, raked up the regis¬
tered packaeges and ran to the front
door of the car, by which he had first
entered. The train, having slowed up
he got off and escaped into the
woods

Senator Warren reported to the
senate Wednesday from the commit¬
tee on claims the house bill for the
allowance of ccrti’n claims for stores
and supplies destroyed during the civil
war under the provisions of the Bow¬
man act. Amendments were made by
the committee and the bill as reported
is recomended for passage It pro¬
poses tti pay in direct appropriations
$2,566,031. The claims include the fol¬
lowing:
Alabama. 32 claims, amounting to
$59,380; Florida. S claims, amounting
co $6,514; Georgia. 26 claims, amount¬
ing to $28,544: North Carolina. 12
claims, amounting tO| 09.995: South
Carolina. 11 claims.aniounting to $321,-
123: Tennessee. 79 claims, amounting
to $106,541; Virginia. 142 claims,
amounting to $146,943.

Whipping of Convict.
Gov. Varda man returned to Jack
son, Miss.. Thursday afternoon from
Rankin penitentiary, where he inves¬
tigated the whipping of Convict How
ell by Sergeant Puckett. The governor,
in speaking of the whipping, said:
“The punishment inflicted upon this
unfortunate convict, was most fiend
ish and betokens depravity and brutal
ity which would disgrace the charac¬
ter of the most abandoned criminal in
the penitentiary.”
He has employed counsel to pros¬
ecute Puckett in the state courts.

Chadwick for his appearance in the
criminal court upon a date- to be fixed
later, was renewed at. Cleveland. Onio,
Tuesday, with V. P. Kline as security.
The amount of the bond was reduced
from $10,000 to $5,000. Mr. Kline, who
is an attorney, will defend Chadwick.
Dr. Chadwick again called at the
county jail Tuesday an 1 asked that
he be permitted to see bis wife pri¬
vately. in order to talk over their af¬
fairs. The doctor was informed that it
