COUKEILMEN ARE CALLED THIEVES.
Notwithstanding Protest, Philadelphia Gas
Plant is Leased to local Cnmpeny.
Amid scenes of disorder, unprece¬
dented In the annals of Philadelphia’s
legislative body, the city council,
Thursday night, voted to lease the
city’s gas works to the United Gas Im¬
provement company for a term of 75
years fo r the total sum of $25,000,009.
the money to be paid in various
amounts before the end of 1907.
The climax was reached when the
vote in common council was announc¬
ed after three hours of debate. A great
uproar was started in the gallery,
which was crowded to the doors.
From all over the gallery came hisses
and cries of “Thieves!" The out¬
burst was somewhat startling to the
presiding officer, who made a vain
effort to quell it. Finally he sent for
a squad of police to clear the gallery,
which started the disorder anew. The
crowd continued to hiss and call the
ccunctlmen thieves and other names
until the police arrived and started to
Clear the gallery. In clearing the gal¬
lery there were several clashes be
tween the police and some of th»
spectators, but no one was hurt.

Equitable insurance Society.
President Roosevelt has been re¬
quested to take cognizance of the
situation that has been brought about
by the Equitable Life Assurance so¬
ciety trouble and to institute a na¬

business as it is now conducted. The
inquiry into the beef trust and the
present Standard Oil investigation

To the Pacific Coast—to California, Oregon, Washington —
round-trip, long transit and return limits, liberal stop-over
privileges.
The raie is practically on the basis of one fare for the round
trip. Of course, if you wish to visit both California and Oregon
or Washington, the cost is slightly more.
These reduced rates are in effect on certain dates in months
of May to October, inclusive. They apply from all Eastern points
via Chicago, St. Louis or Memphis gateways. The Rock Island
System will take you up in either Chicago or St. Loui3,or at hundreds
of other Middle West points and carry you to the Coast in through
Standard or Tourist Sleepers with unexcelled Dining Car service.
The Rock Island also affords a choice of routes: on the “Scenic”
route you can stop off in Colorado—see Salt Lake City—visit
Yellowstone National Park; on the “Southern” route you can go
via El Paso, thru New Mexico, then “up coast” to. San Francisco
and on io Portland or Seattle if desired.
In short, these Pacific Coast excursions offer an unusually good
chance to see our western country in a comprehensive manner.
e
If you desire to go only as far as Colorado, there are excursion
rates in effect to that section and return, all summer long,
specially reduced June 30 to July 4, August 12 and 13,
and August 30 to September 4. Extension trips to Ogden
or Salt Lake and return at low cost also.
From September 15 to October 31, 1905, one-way
tourist or “ colonist ” tickets will be on sale to California and
the Pacific Northwest —about half regular fare.
If interested, send name and address on thia coupon, designating
wliich booklet wanted and to v/hat point you plan to go. Name probable
date of start also, so we can advise definitely v/ith respect to rates, etc.
