Dr. Robert Ellis Thompson, of
Philadelphia, has a vision, if we may
apply such a word to the well ponder¬
ed plan of a distinguished man of
science. Woman, the home maker
and mother, should not be hampered
by household drudgery. Cooking is a
matter of chemistry, and will be done
by men. All the tedious chores of
housework, washing, dish washing,
scrubbing, ironing, sweeping, house
cleanipg—Oh, word of horror to the
ears of man!—will be done by public
housework concerns. Houses will be
heated from a central plant and swept
by hydraulic brooms. Meals will
come from the grand central cookery
or its nearest branch. Stairs will he
supplanted by automatic elevators.
Washing day will disappear from the
week. Even now many women send
a telephone call for window cleaners
and have tneir husbands' “socks"
darned by specialists. In the cities
you have your clocks wound and your
lamps trimmed and tended by outside
Experts. In the Norwegian town of
Bergen everybody’s food comes from
the town kitchen. In Paris the work¬
man gets his hot soup from the grand
central dinner kettle. Happy day, if
it ever comes, when women have no
servants and no household drudgery
to earn wrinkles by! We do not un¬
derstand, however, just bow a woman
whose husband “gets ten per” is go¬
ing to have that automatic elevator.
Do the city, the town, the State pay
for all these "private utilities," made
“public utilities?” Ricn women
escape drudgery now. How are the
poor women to do it?”

THE MODERN PARMER.
How He Lives as Coinpiiroil With Fifty
Years Ago,
T HE farming life of to-day, as
contrasted with that of fifty
years ago, is a paradise of
comfort and convenience. The
lonely loghouse, remote from market
and devoid of advantages that a half
cycie of time has made possible, would
scarcely appeal to the present day
farmer.
The twentieth century soil tiller has
practically all the modern comforts.
His mail is delivered daily. lie ha,s
telephonic connection with the buying
and selling world, affording the best
opportunities for marketing to advan¬
tage. His home is of recent architec¬
ture, constructed of wood, brick or
stone, and well furnished. He has
modern plumbing and modern heating,
and with the advent of acetylene gas,
he has modern lighting. At night his
home is as attractively illuminated as
that of his city brother, for it is a sug¬
gestive fact that “acetylene for coun¬
try homes” has so npperfled to the farm¬
er that of the 80,000 users of acetj
lone gas in the United States the farm,
er is one of the largest of all classes.
Ever seeking the best, he has not hesi¬
tated in availing himself of this new
light.

Are tlio Packers Receiving Fair Play?
When the Garfield report on the
business methods of the packers ap¬
peared. after eight months’ investiga¬
tion. it was severely criticised and
roundly denounced. After three months
of publicity it is significant that those
who attempted to discredit it have
failed to controvert the figures con¬
tained in that exhaustive document.
The public is beginning to notice this
omission, and the feeling is rapidly
growing that the sensational charges
out of which the “Beef Investigation”
arose were without foundation. If the
official statements of the report are
susceptible of contradiction, a good
many people are now asking why tho
facts and figures are not furnished to
contradict them.
The continued growth and progress
of this great country, ever a cause of
wonderment, has no greater exempli¬
fication than evolution on the farm.
Already the farmer is becoming the
most envied of men—the freest, the
healthiest, the happiest!

The truth seems to be that most of
tile charges contain unfounded sensa¬
tional assertions. A flagrant example
of this appeared in a recent article in
an Eastern magazine, to tlio effect that
“forty Iowa banks were forced to close
their doors in 1903-4 by tlio Beef
Trust’s manipulation of cattle prices.”
Chief Clerk Cox, of the banking de¬
partment of (lie Iowa State Auditor’s
ojlice, has tabulated tho list of banks
given in the magazine articie and has
publicly denounced tho statement as
utterly untrue. He gives separately
the reasons for each failure mentioned
and officially states that they have
been caused by unwise speculations and
by reckless banking methods. It may
be well to suspend judgment upon tlio
packers until the charges against them
are proved.

A Revised Fable.
A discouraged ant watched a man
who was trying to wheel a heavy load
up hill.
1 ne lo'ad was far beyond his
strength apparently, but he pushed
and labored until he had nearly
reached the top.
Then, as he paused to rest, the load
escaped, rolled rapidly t' the bottom
and spilled out into the mud.
The man placed his hands upon his
hips and swore what is popularly
known as a “blue streak.”
“That seems a good, easy scheme
for one in trouble,” said the insect.
’I will try it.”
But the ant speedily found himself
a the bug lockup.
Moral: While man may consider
:he ant with exceeding benefit, it does
aot necessarily follow that the ant
nay profitably imitate man.
