A few days since a popular attorney
called upon another member of the
profession and asked his opinion upon a
certain point in law. The lawyer to
whom the qtuJ timi was addressed drew
himself up aud said; “generally get p.dd

LOSS 6UO.1I EXPOS IK I- OF
COTTON'.
[Editorial in Morning Star of May 25th.]
The Star hay refrained from the
occasional course of it-* contemporaries
of giving grautitiousjadviee to its friends
behind the hoe who are the bone and
sinew of the country, and who are, in
these enlightened days of progressive
farming, generally better judges of
practical questions than many who take
a superficial or sentimental vi.-w of the
situation. The Star i», however, in a
position to know- tha many of its friends
are suffering serious loss by the unwise
exposure on the plantations of thousands
of bales of cotton to the continuous
Spring rains this season, which lias been
estimated, in many instanc s, as high as
30 per cent, of ihe market value. It has
been claimed by some of those who
have no storing facilities that tire bides
will not suffer much injury in the open
if they tire kept ou their edge upon poles
which hold them a few incites clear off
the ground; and, if the bides are turned
upside down , after every rain in
order that the moisture absobed may be
quickly evaporated. It is also claimed
that the cotton so treated will gain in
weight to the farmer’s advanage and
that the risk of loss bv fire is reduced to
a minimum without the expense of
insurance.
it must be manifest by experience,
however, that these specious claims are
not surstained by results. Exposure to
the sun and Whiter rain warps and de¬
faces the bagging, rust the lioops, and
makes an unsightly package, while heats the
litter warmer rains of the Spring
the cotton, fermentation follows and in
many snstances thirty or sixty pounds of
rotting and worthle-s cotton must be re¬
moved and the bale repacked iu a crude
and unsatisfactory way' before it is lit
for shipment. We have seen in
Wilmington recently thousands of
damaged bales waiting for tire slow and
expensive process of picking before they
can be shipped as merchantable. Many
of these bales must prove ;r loss of at
least a cent a pound to the fatmer.
Moreover, the practice of exposing cot¬
ton at the plantations seems to be largely
confined to our own section—that is to
say, the (Jarolmus. Farther South a
better method prevails and the ware¬
house system is used by many farmers
who have i;o storage facilities. It should
not be overii o reel that mi l buy e s and
expoiters prmer ilie lots that have been
protected even by a temporary and
inexpentive shelter which is within the
means or oyery prducer. there is, then,
no question as to actual weight and
grades, nor any delay in s ettlem ents, nor
any rejection of mis-shapen bales,
We are if or rued that some of the
ptij»ici]>> Vipaatu ’ iytts damaged are now refusing to bid
o of i recent heavy ijmd reclamations cotton from because mills
at home and abroad. We also learn from
rvtpresehtafives msiiaime of Marine Underwriters
that aginst country damage
will be difficult to obtain next season,
even at advanced premiums.
It behooves the cotton planter with
• hose facts before him to protect his
cotton crop Irom damage by simple and
reasonable precautions after it has passed
the inevitable viccissimdes of fro-t,
drought, excessive moisture, rust, in¬
fects and other natural and unnatural
foes between the planting and the pick¬
ing of ibis royal gift of God.
You Must
Sleep.
If you cannot, it is due to an
irritated or congested state of
the brain, which will soon de
velope into nervous prostration.
Nature demands sleep, and
it is as important as food; it
is a part of her building and
sustaining process. This period
of unconsciousness relaxes the
mental and physical strain, and
allows nature to restore ex¬
hausted vitality.
Dr. Miles’ Nervine brings
refreshing the sleep, because it
soothes irritation and re¬
moves the congestion.
It is also a nerve builder; it
nourishes and strengthens ev¬
ery nerve in your body, and
creates energy in all the organs.
Nothing will give strength
and vitality as surely and
quickly as Dr. Miles’ Nervine.
“During the past •winter I had two
attacks of LaGrippe which left me
very weak, and in bad condition. *
was so nervous I could not sleep. Mv
wife, after trying- different remedies,
went for a doctor. The doctor was
out, and a neighbor recommended Dr.
Miles’ Nervine, and she brought home
a bottle. I had not slept for some time,
and had terrible pains in my head.
After taking a few doses of Nervine
the pain was not so severe, and I
slept. bottle, 1 am now taking the second
and am verv much improved.”
