Trouble in Chicago.
Charges of bribery igainst an of¬
ficial of the Employers’ Teaming com¬
pany were made at. Chicago Thursday
to the grand Jury by President Shea
of De teamsters’ union, and by Al¬
bert Young, former president of the
same organization.
Young and Shea claim that they
were offered $10,000 two years ago to
tiring about a strike of the teams¬
ters employed by Sears, Roebuck &
Co., which is a rival concern of Mont¬
gomery, 'Ward & Co. They said that
they refused the money and the
strike was never called.
Site a was the first witness and his
testimony covered the offering of the
bribe and his statement that he would
noC call the strike for $100,000. Al¬
bert Young was then called and gave
similar testimony. After leaving the
Jury room Young made statements to
newspaper reporters, going more into
detail than those he had made bo
fore the jury.
He was again subpenaed and
brought before the jury a second time.
He refused to tell where the meet¬
ing had taken place, or to name
the men who were present when the
fTO,000 was said to have been offered,
on the ground that he might incrim¬
inate himself. He was taken before
Judge Barnes, who aSlted a numbet
of questions and finally decided that
Young would not incriminate himself,
and he ordered him to make answers
forthwith.
Young and the members of the
grand jury then returned to the jury
room and he was questioned for one
hour. He gave the names of the men
offering the money, but refused, af¬
ter leaving the jury room to discuss
whaf" had taken place.
States Attorney Healv declared that ;
all persons connected with tide inquiry j
had been sworn to secrecy and that j
nothing of the proceedings would be 1
revealed.
