Cary Wood, former proprietor of the
Wood Skirt company in Atlanta, who
was arrested recently .because of
suspicious circumstances surrounding
the fire that started in his place of
business at 50 1-2 West Mitchell, has
been indicted by the grand Jury Tor
arson. Mr. Wood is now in the At¬
lanta jail pending a plea by his coun¬
sel for a writ of lunacy.

Contract Let for Grading.
The contract for the grading an5
tieing of the Bremen and Southwest¬
ern railway, which will run from Bre¬
men, in Haralson county, to Bowdon,
In Carroll county, has been let, and
•'ho grading will begin at once. This
road will develop some of Carroll’s
best, farming, mining and timber land.
The contractors agree to have the
road to Bowdon in operation by Jan¬
uary 1, 1906.
Prisoners Take Leg Bail.
A daring jail delivery was effected !
In Valdosta Sunday at noon. Ches¬
ter Smith and Will Walker, prisoners
confined in tin- county jail, knocked
down Vasco Ezell, son of the jailer,
when he went to give them their din¬
ner, and made a successful break for
liberty.
Both men wore under sentence, one
of them to live years in the peniten¬
tiary and the other to a term in ihe
county chalngang.

Club Members to Face Court.
Muscogee Club, the leading social
organization of its character In Colum¬
bus, has been Indicted by the grand
jury on the charge of selling liquors
on Sunday.
It is understood that the club,
through its president, will enter a
plea of guilty. The practice of sell¬
ing drinks on Sunday to chib mem¬
bers has bemi carried on openly and
with no effort at concealment. The
returning of the indictment created
quite a ripple in club circles,

Witham Enjoins Tax Collector.
At the instance of W. S. Witham,
banker. .ltn'Ae .1. t. Pendleton at At¬
lanta has signed a temporary restrain¬
ing order enjoining Tax (^.-Hector A.
P. Stewart from levying the occupa
tion tax li. fas. which he issued
against the plaintiff. The case has
been set for hearing on June 24th.
Tax Collector Stewart AccentIv is¬
sued sixty one tax fi. fas. against Mr.
Witham. each being for $10, tno tax
levied against presidents of banks by
the state. He is the executive head
of many banks, and double tax has
been assessed against him as a pen¬
alty. Mr. Witham charges the tax is
unconstitutional; that it is class legis¬
lation.

Regiment Cannot Leave State.
The third regiment infantry, Geot

to leave the state for the purpose of
holding an encampment at the Isle
of Palms, off Charleston, a decision
of the executive which will, no doubt.

Pardon for Ex-Senator Dodd.
The prison commission recommend¬
ed that a pardon be granted forme*
State Senator W. P. Dodd of the for¬
ty-third district, who is serving a two
years' sentence at the state prison
farm for embezzlement of county
school funds while he was school com¬
missioner of Gordon county. Dodd
has served a year and one month
of hie sentence.
His friends at once began a move¬
ment to secure a pardon for him.
Never 'has the prison commission had
so unanimous a request for clemency.

jury of Bartow county, adjoining Gor¬
j don, urged the commission to grant
him a pardon. Every member of the
state senate in which Dodd had served
strongly urged his pardon and numer¬
ous requests in his behalf came from
all parts of the state.
The commission, however, decided
that in view of Dodd’s conviction of
this crime, even though there appear¬
ed extenuating circumstances, he
should be required to serve at least
a year of his sentence before favor¬
able, action was taken.

No Change in Passenger Fare.
Three cents a mile will continue
to tie the railroad passenger fare in
Georgia, for the present at least. The
railroad commission a few days ago
passed an order declining to grant the
motion of Chairman J. Pope Brown
for a reduction to two cents a mile.
The order, which is a very brief one,
is as follows;

The order is signed by H. W. Hill
and Joseph M. Brown, J. Pope Brown

Merritt has been busily engaged for
several days, and will be busy for
some time, arranging for teachers’ in¬
stitutes in different counties of the
state.

connection with agriculture” is receiv¬
ing much attention at the different in

ing bold of the question very readily
and with such interest that Professor
Merritt has been much gratified.
