Hitch Win Deliver Address.
Hon. Robert M. Hitch of Savannah,
■who was in command of the troops
at Statesboro last summer when trey
were overpowered by a mob and the
two negroes, who were afterwards
burned at the stake, Reed and Cato,
W'ere taken from them, has been in¬
vited to deliver an address to the
people of Statesboro on July 20. He
was invited by the Confederate vet¬
erans.
Favor Sale of state Road.
In response to a call published in
The Cartersville News, a number of
leading business and professional men
of Cartersville and Bartow county
met to consider the Conner bill, now
pending in the legislature for the
sale of the state road. The senti¬
ment of the town and county is prac¬
tically unanimous for the sale. The
matter is attracting much attention
and exciting wide-spread interest in I
north Georgia. i

“Jim Crow” Bill in Senate.
Among a number of bills which have
been introduced in the senate is a
“jtm crow” law, which, if passed, will
require street car companies in the
state to provide separate compart¬
ments or cars for negroes.
This measure was introduced by
Senator Stran^nf seven!
who believes that it will meet with
such hearty public fabor that it will
he made a law by the present gen¬
eral assembly.
Handsome Gift From Peabody.
The largest individual gift to the
new Mumford Memorial hall at the
Georgia Industrial Home is a check
received by Manager J. R- Gunn from
George Foster Peabody for $600. The
response of this well known bene¬
factor is highly appreciated and this
is one of many valuable donations
tc the cause.
Manager Gunn states that the fund
for the new hall is being gathered
rapidly and he hopes through such
donations as that of Mr. Peabody to
erect a most handsome building a,
the home to the memory of the
founder, the late Rev. W- E. Mum
ford.

Governor Sells His Cotton.
Governor Joseph M. Terrell has
sold his cotton crop, which was gath¬
ered in on his Meriwether county
farms last fall. And the governor by
joining the Southern Cotton Associa¬
tion and following up the agreements
of that association got the fat price
of ten cents per pound for his fleecy
staple. believer
The governor was a firm
in the association, and while many
of bds friends advised him to sell in
December, in January, in February
and in March because they thought
Ibe price was going down, the gov¬
ernor held on, and now he thinks
he was fully repaid by Ins holding.
New Express Company Proposed.
A charter will probably he applied
for within the next few da?s for
“The People’s Express company,”
with headquarters in Atlanta.
It is understood that a petition has
been taken to a number of prominent
merchants in the city, asking them to
take stock in a company which will
run in competition with the South¬
ern Express company.
The purpose of the proposed com¬
pany is to do a general express busi¬
ness in the southern states. It is
stated that the company will he char¬
tered with a capkal stock of $ 2 dh,
000 ard 10 per cent of that amount,

Reunion of Veterans October 24 25.
The veterans, sens of veterans,
raayor and council, Maccn fair associ-
ation and chamber of commerce met

j Georgia division of Confederate vet
eia] the past week and decided that
j October 24 and 25 would be suitable
I dates for holding the Georgia reunion
at Macon next fall.
This will be on the occasion of
the first two days of the Georgia
Farmers’ Fair and Live Stock Ex¬
position. Special attractions and en¬
tertainment will he prepared for the
veterans by the f.xir management.
On October the Georgia division
of the Daughters of the Confederacy
will hold a convention in the city and
inducements will he offered for them
to meet at the fair grounds.

A Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
At what is considered one of the
best freight rate conventions ever
held in Georgia, an organization to
be known as the Georgia Chamber of
Commerce was formed at Macon the
past week after three sessions ofrep
sentatives from the leading towns and
cities of the state. The following
committee recommendations were
adopted;

facts developed in the deliberations
of this convention of commercial bod
ie s of Georgia that the best interest

conserved and
industrial and commercial devel

I ive co-operation of the business ini
j terest; and,
“Whereas, all the interests with
which we have to deal are compactly
organized and the commercial bod¬
ies remain separate and not infre¬
quently antagonizing each

reached by co-operation, and constant
misunderstandings would be alleviat¬
ed by conference and discussion on
common ground.
‘‘Therefore this committtee recom¬
mends the organization of the Geor¬
gia Chamber of Commerce, to he com¬
posed of representatives of the local
commercial organizations of the state,
whose object shall be consideration,
discussion and concerted action on all
subjects of common interest to the
bodies composing the federation, the
chief subject being transportation,
public utilities, insurant J) immigra¬
tion, advertising, legislation, develop¬
ment of the states resources and

Japanese peace plenipotentiaries
sailed from Yokohama, Japan, Satur¬
day afternoon.
The governor of Yokohama and the
civic bodies escorted the plenipoten¬
tiaries to the pier, where they were
received by a military guard.
The Marquis Iio, Premier Katsura
and oilier members of the cabinet,
Mr. Grisc-om, the American minister,
and the staff of the legation, were
among those who accompanied Baron
Komura and his party to the Minne¬
sota.
