A “Child'’ of Nature and Seme of His
Idiosyncrasies.
Convinced of tde futility of life as it
is lived by the average sojourer in
this vale of tears and clothes, E. AY.
Darling, who abhors a shirt, consents
to wear a coat and knee breeches
when on dress parade, but usually at
tires himself in nothing but a fig leaf
clout .has declared his intentions of
returning to the aboriginal existence.
The very picture of Adam, Mr.
Darling struck town yesterday after
noon without hat, shirt, shoes or
stockings, en route for Ceylon, and,
fearful of being misunderstood, volun
tered an explanation as to his appear
ance, manner of life and plans for the
future. Mr. Darling believes that with
proper living there is no limit to exis
tence, and he is out for a prolonged
stay cn this mundane sphere. The
first article of his creed is to go as
nearly naked as the law will allow.
Born in Kansas, reared in Ontario,
Can., the Darlings emigrated to Port
land, Ore. In 1S99 E. W. Darling, the
son, came south and matriculated at
the Leland Stanford. Jr., University.
Here an elective course, embracing
studies kindred to medical science,
was pursued. While studying at
Stanford the desire to get nearer to
nature’s heart grew upon Darling, and
in the seclusion of his own home he
practiced simplicity in dress, often
taking to the woods, where, onob
s?rved, he may be studied in the
nude.
Leaving Stanford last May. Darling
determined upon devoting his life to
teaching living his belief. Con¬
sequently, without scrip or purse, hat¬
less, shoeless and as scantily clad as
decency would permit, Darling start
ed out in a search of a congenial en
vironment. One of the tenets of his
belief is that the only healthful diet
is of fruit and nuts. So his desire
has „a, B been to be occupied where the
f frult it wa f °, f f the b hp ® a ., ‘- During the
summer he has worked m . ^ the drying , .
establishments of the foothill region,
near Los Angeles, but his ideal has
not been reached. On Tuesday this
child of nature will start for Ceylon,
where he hopes to find conditions to
his liking. All he wants is solitude,
plenty of fruit, floods of sunshine and
and the privilege of dressing as do
the Indians, the only garment being
the clout.
As for marriage. Daring has for¬
ever forsworn the opposite sex, and
will endeavor to surround himself
with a company of congenial spirits
who take the same view of life as
im.'ii i ng
too many people in existence now,
and could his ideas he carried out
people would live forever; hence no
occasion for marriage.
Darling is the picture of health, evi¬
dently enjoys his manner of life, and
his face lights up with joyful antici¬
pation as he describes the future
awaiting those following in his (bare)
footsteps.—Los Angeles Times.

This “name guarantee” we all look for in

| what can be more important than our

Everybody knows that all intelligent
housekeepers are very particular about the
| buying of things to eat and drink, and no¬
body realizes it more the than the of up-to-date his
grocer, who caters to wants cus¬
tomers.
For instance, every real grocer knows
the Ltox reason Coffee, for the the universal leader of popularity all package of
coffees. He knows that its uniform purity
and high quality have made it welcome in
millions of American homes for over a
quarter of a century.
Realizing this be cannot but band it out
cheerfully when asked for it. He knows
that the people accept the package as a
guarantee of the contents.
i'et there may be a few grocers left who
do not recognize that the buyer—not the
seller—has the right of choice, and they
may want to sell their loose coffee (who
knows what it is, or where it came from?)
instead oi Lion Coffee, which the cus¬
tomer asks for, and the merits of which
both know.
