Tin; mi:at is tiii; cocoasut.
Tin fact that Hose Smith secured
■~50,0*>0 from Pierpout Morgan & Go,, is
not the “meat in the cocoanut.’ The
point is this: When he received the
money, although he paid every cent of
it back, did Mr. Smith and the Atlanta
Journal, at that time, become subsidized.'
Mr. Smith has utterly failed to clear
this matter up.
And to the honest yeomanry of Geor¬
gia it is suspicious that a man’s interest
should be so entwiued with that of the
Southern Railway, that its president
should steer him into Wall street for
the purpose of procuring large sums of
money.
Mr. Smith has proven himself a dem.
agogue and a hypocrite by his inconsis¬
tent position in the matter of his speech
two years ago at the Kimbal nouse
banquet, when he paid such eulogies to
Spencer, the Southern railway, Gover¬
nor Terrell, the State of Georgia, in
contrast to his present attitude on these
matters now.
Many honest people, who were sin¬
cere in their advocacy of Mr. Smith’s
candidacy, have realized that he is not
the man to lead them to victory, and
arc weakening on him. In fa^t, they
cannot consistently hold their position
and support him.

We’ve been studying the liquor
question for some years, with unsatis¬

mit that Hon. Hoke Smith has added a
new phase to it, viz: That it is alright
to sell liquor just so long as you devote
the i in eipts from it to charity.
