A French Peasant's Find.
Not long ago a French peasant
named Maurin, while pottering about
between Meade and Chateauneuf-sur
Randrwt. in the Dnvp-q, mpfl? n re¬
markable archaeological discovery.
His pick, at one particu’ar stroke
sank into the soil with an ease mat
excited his suspicions. Carefully pro¬
ceeding as dug down into the rums
of a dwelling that speedily betrayed
itself as very ancient. When fully
uncovered it proved to be the remains
of a Roman villa once luxuriously fur¬
nished. The walls still bear traces
of rich frescoes. And behind the
cuckoo clock on the mantlepiece the
peasant Maurin came across the lit¬
tle tin savings bank of the late in¬
fant Cains Lueullus, Jr. It contain¬
ed a large number of valuable coins,
bearing effigies of Roman emperors
and such like, and Maurin came out
of the adventure naturally in the
humor of little Jack Horner.
Later diggings, while unproductive
of any more tin savings banks, uncov¬
ered more fragments of walls, a.ll ap¬
parently belonging to an old Roman
town.—Philadelphia Record.

Unless early and correct treatment is
applied the patient seldom survives
when once the disease is fastened upon
her. Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound is the most efficient treat¬
ment for kidney troubles of women,
and is the only medicine especially
prepared for this purpose.
When a woman is troubled with pain
or weight in loins, backache, frequent,
painful or scalding urination, swelling
of limbs or feet, swelling under the
eyes, an uneasy, tired feeling in the
region of the kidneys or notices a brick
dust sediment in the urine, she should
lose no time in commencing treatment
with Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound, as it may be the means of
saving her life.
For proof, read what Lydia E. Pink
ham’s Vegetable Compound did for Mrs.
Sawyer. I the terrible
“ cannot express suffering I
had to endure. A derangement of the female
serious organs developed trouble. nervous The prostration doctor and a

I was unable to anything, and I made up
my mind I could not Ike, I finally decided
to Try Lydia E. Pinkham’s I Vegetable to-day Com¬

woman. I cannot praise it too highly, and I
tell every suffering woman a!>out inv case.”

EFFECT OF ACETYLENE RAYS ON
crowth cf plants.
Grow to Twice Actual Weight of Those
.Exposed to Sunlight Only — latest
Victory For This New and Beautiful
Illuminaut.
The experiments recently made at
Cornell University prove that The beau¬
tiful rays from the gas, acetylene, are
as effective as sunlight on tile growth
of plants, anil this may soon become a
subject for serious consideration by ail
progressive cultivators of the soil.
The results of the experiments are
astonishing, inasmuch as they show
conclusively the great increase of
growth attained by supplementing
"The Light of Nature" with "The Light
of Acetylene” during the hours in
which the plants would otherwise be
in darkness. For instance, a certain
number of radish plants subjected to
acetylene light during the night grew
to twice the actual weight of the same
number of radishes given daylight only,
all other conditions being equal, and
peas had blossomed and partially ma¬
tured pods with the help of acetylene
light, while without the added light
not even buds were apparent.
Acetylene is already taking its place
as an illuminaut for towns from a cen¬
tral plant, forlightinghouses, churches,
schools and isolated buildings of all
kinds, and it is being used successfully
for many other purposes.
A striking and important feature of
acetylene is the ease and small expense
with which it can be made available
compared with the great advantages
derived from its use. The machine in
which the gas is generated is easily in¬
stalled.
A Progressive Pup.
Mother Florence, the good old soul
who sells War Cry,s at the State
House in Topeka, tells a good dog
story. A little boy had a pup which
h.e wanted to sell. It was during a
P 01 tical i campaign, One morning he
gathered the pup up in his arms and
went to the home of the Democratic
candidate.
“Please mister, won’t you buy my
pup?” asked t-he boy.
"I don't need any pup,” replied the
candidate.
“But this is such a fine pup,” said
the boy. “It is a regular Democratic
pup.”
“Get out of here, you little imp!”
growled the Democrat. “How dare
you insult me by calling that dog a
Democrat!”
The b oy moved on with his pup,
That day tlie Democratic candidate
met his Republican opponent and told
him of the Insult. The next morning,
bright and early, the boy with his
pup appeared at the home of the Re¬
publican candidate.
Please, mister, won’t you buy my
pup?” he asked.
“What kind of a pup is it?” asked
the candidate.
“Oh, its a fine pup,” said the boy,
with his eyes lighting up. “Why,
mister, it is a regular Republican
pup.”
“Republican pup, eh?”
“Yes, sir.”
“B«t you told my opponent yester¬
day morning that it was a Democratic
pup.”
“I know it,” returned the boy, “hut
you see the pup lias got its eyes open
since then.”—Kansas City Journal.

Let Common Sense Decide
Do you honestly believe, that coffee sold loose (in bulk), exposed
to dust, germs and insects, passing
through many hands (some of
them not over-clean), “blended,”
you don't know bow or by whom,
is tit for your use If Of course you
don't. But
LION COFFEE
Is another story. The green
berries, selected by keen
fudges at the plantation, are
skillfully roasted at our fac¬
tories, where precautions you
would not dream of are taken
to secure perfect cleanliness,
flavor,strength and unilormlly.
From the, time the coffee leaves
the factory no hand touches it till
it is opened in your kitchen.
This has made LION COFFEE the LEADER OF AIL PACKAGE COFFEES.
