Official Organ of Taliaferro County.
Our good roads have almest
been washed away.
That fellow who writes the
editorials for the Atlanta Jour¬
nal reminds us of the proverbial
bull in a China shop.
We hear it said that Hon.
‘ Dosh.” Massengale is slated for
Commissioner of Agriculture on
the Hoke S*nith ticket.
Its funny that other points in
the state cannot see that Atlanta
is trying to “run the hog over
them” in that port rale matter.
We dislike to appear so per¬
sistent, but we are still waiting
for Parson Atkinson, of the Har¬
lem Sentinel, to tell the public
what he thinks of his candidate’s
“charity barroom. ”
It is really amusing to hear
the “prohibitionists- ferollice
and revenue-only” try to explain
why it is consistent for Hoke to
run a charity bar-room.
Not in years have the farmers
had a brighter prospect for a
-ood price for their cotton than
ey have for the crop now com
g on. They should take' ad
. antage of the occasion and
market their cotton judiciously.
We would bo glad to see the
Stephens High school made a
free school. This, however.
L should'’Tss ybue by popular sub¬
scription, as the charter of the
town forbids a tax levy for
school purposes.
We were at Warrenton last
Friday and, from what we heard
(aud we are mighty good list¬
ener) we believe Joe Hill Hall
can get Warren’s two votes in
the State Convention for gover¬
nor. And we believe Joe will
be a candidate, too.
And now “Holy Hoke” says
that Guerry would have stood a
splendid chance of being elected
governor if he hadn’t been
“hampered by that prohibition
question.” If Hoke doesn’t look
out lie’ll get mixed “worser than
ever” on tiie liquor question.
The Cedartown Standard ap
pears' to think all Democrats
should support Hoke Smith be¬
cause he has always fought Tom
Watson and Populism. But now
that Hoke wants votes he is will¬
ing 10 take it all back, bnt the
thing is so thin a blind man can
see through it.
Several have asked us what
we thought of Booker Washing -
ton and old John Wannarriaker.
The negro will not let a white
man get on an social plane with
im. You are either above him
• below him. According to this
d John must be several degrees
below Booker.
While at. Warrenton last week,
•we had a conversation with M a -
jor C. E. McGregor, lie inform¬
ed us that he was squarely in the
race for Congress, fie wit! mri
in the primary as a Je "ersonian
Democrat and will, for various
reasons, receive the cordial po
dorse meat for Hon. Thomas E
Watson,
A FEW THOUGHTS.
A word to the grand jury;
Instead of taking up the time of
the body in making useless and
unconstitutional recommenda¬
tions, see if you cannot tied out
why Taliaferro’s taxable prop¬
erty has decreased;look into the
present system of working the
public roads; give it a thorough
investigation and tell the people
what you think about it; look
closely into the financial condi¬
tion of the county. The.se
things are within your province,
and should be looked into. Pay
no attention to men with petty
spites and grudges. Don’t
grind any axes yourself, and if
you find any one else with one to
grind, don’t turn the grind-stone
for him.
Every man who will be on the
next grand jury, so far as we
know, is a capaple, upright and
honest citizen. It would be pre ¬
sumption in this writer to at
tempt to tell them what to do.
But, in the light of what other
grand juries ha v’e done, we feel
that these few hues are not out
of place.

smoke and coal dust on my lungs: but,
after finding no reliof in other remedies,
