JUDGE HOLDEN’S
STOCK FARM.
The Best Breed of Berk¬
shire Hogs.
Several years ago. Judge
Hoideu decided to start a small
stock farm, principally lor the
purpose of raising the best breed
of and now lias a line breed
of Berkshire hogs as can be found
id the United Slates. tie started
out to that get nothing but the- best
biv-ed there is the country,
and he succeeded in doing so.
He first bought a gilt out of
MEliRY MAIlJ, a sow of the
celebrated LONGFELLOW
strain, which were sired by
LUSTER'S LOYAL LEE, of
Biltmore. He out of LUSTER,
imported from England by the
manager of Vanderbilt’s farm at
Biltmore. whose catalogue speaks
of her as one of the finest sows
they owned. He was sired by
great LOYAL LEE II, the chain
pion boar of America.
This gilt was bred to DANES
FIELD COMPLETION, a boar
which sold at Biltmore at auction
at 8 months old, for $115.00
From this gilt bred to DANES
FIELD COM FLECTION Judge
IIoldeK secured five sows.
He then undertook to obtain
from Vanderbilt’s farm at Bilt¬
more thebest boar they had to use
with the sows not related to them
and bought a pig there which
cost him a considerable sum.
Wo have seeu the letter written
Judge Holden when this boar was
sent him,and here is a copy of it:
BILTMORE FARMS,
Biltmore, N. C.,
March 7. 1905.
Hon. Horace M. Holden,
Dear Sir. Crawfordville, (la
We have had your boar up for
the last tyi, days, and he is feed¬
ing out jsp andidly. I think he is

Weuue. .a r afternoon, lie is a
splendid! bred boar, being out
of Hurric ue 2nd, a sow that we
bought at au English show after
she had won first, and it is blood
that has been producing the best
for many years. She is out of
Tact, a sow that we sold in our
last sale for $400 DO, tlie only two
of whose daughters were sold for
$230 00 each. Tact is inbred to
old Parish Council, one of the
great sows we found in England
in 1899, and who left there a
great many noted animals, both
as prize winners and producers.
$he is also the dam of ot The
Huntress, a sow that has pro¬
duced a great many winners in
England and is now in the Bilt¬
more herd, one of whose daugh¬
ters was sold last year for $500.
I will appreciate a line how you
like him, and if you don’t like
him, you can ship him right
back, but we have nothing on
hand that I would rather use
myself. Yours truly,
BILTMORE FARMS.
By Geo. F. Weston.
General Manager.
We have also seen the
hogs and the pigs which
Judge Holden has uu his farm,
and they arp certainly a fine speci¬

has one of the
pigs, which is about 111 mouths
old. and it will vvhigh about 450
pounds.. |
The Berkshire hog is consider
ed the breed uf hogs, as many
hog raisers contend it takes less
food for them thau any other
breed, they are good hunters for
their own living in the pasture,
and they have less entrails in
them thau almost any other hog.

giving a greater net when
killed lor meat.
The pure breed of Berkshire
hogs areas much superior *. to the
common is the hog'as , the Jersey cow
to common cow, and it will
only be a few years before tlie
common hogs will play out and
the best breed of hogs wili
be raised.
The price at which Judge Hol¬
den is selling his pigs is
low. He only asks

apiece for them at about two
months old. The express on a
pig fiom Biltmore or some other
distant place would cost almost
as much as the price Judge Hol¬
den is asking for them. You can
buy from Judge Holden’s farm
a pig for $0.00 a pig that would
cost you from $30.00 to $50.00 at
other places, besides the express
and when you buy one of these
pigs you may know that you are
getting as fine breed of Berk¬
shire pigs as there is in the
United Slates, if not as fine breed
as there is in the world, as all of
his hogs come from Biltmore, a
farm established in North Caro¬
lina by Vanderbilt, whose mana¬
ger undertook to get from Eng¬
land, the home of the Berkshire,
the best breed of Berkshire hogs
in oxistence, regardless of price.
Judge Holden has recently sold
some of his piers, but has on hand
a few now ready for sale, which
can be obtained by seeing or
writing Mr. T, L. Bentley, at
Crawfordville, who is selling
them for him
