Powder Works Blows Up Wreaking
Death and Destruction.
MOST HORRIBLE DISASTER
Ten Buidings, Composing Rand Com¬
pany Plant. Totally Wrecked.
Oilier Property Damaged.
The Hand IHnvder Mills in the sub¬
urbs of FaJrchance, six miles sou h
of llnlonlown, Pa., were eutirely wip¬
ed out by an explosion at 9:05
o'clock Saturday morning.
Of the thirty-two men who went to
work in the mill in the morning, nine¬
teen an* known to he dead. Of these
thirteen have been Identified. Nine
men, including C. M. Hand, manager
of the plant, were seriously injured.
The shock of the explosion was dis¬
tinctly felt in Connellsville, 20 miles
away, buildings being rocked on their
foundations. At Uniontown hundreds
of panes of glasses were broken. In
the town of Fai reliance there is
scarcely a house that did not suffer
damage. The sided were battered
as though axes had been' used. Hay
fta-eks wore toppled over in the fields,
and live stock were stunned.
A passenger train on the llaltimoro
and Ohio railroad, northbound, from
Morgan.own to Connellsville, which
was passing the works when the first
explosion occurred,was almost thrown
from the track by the explosion. Alt
the windows were shattered, and the
pas: i-ng'vs thrown into a pane. H;ul
the train been a few seconds later it
would have been blown up, as the
mills were in a few rods of the
tracks.
A street car on the West Pennsyl¬
vania railroad had also :\: ■ 'd jus a
few seconds before the explosion and
was far enough away to escape dam
go. though it xv.'.s derailed. There
wore seven explosions in all.

totally demolished. Not a vestige of
them remain. The debris that was
strewn over the 10 acres of ground
where the plant was located, took tire
soon after the explosion and ‘
ItCA it.. ns to rite disaster.
The dismembered parts of the dead
were burned in many Instances. Iden¬
tification of many was made by ports
oi clothing alone. The first three ex¬
plosion- wore not as serious as the
last four. Then tho packing home,
pressing room and magazine blew tip,
followed by two cars of dynamite
standing on a nearby railroad siding,
which were sc, off by the concussion
from the powder mil! explosions.
Identification Difficult.
A\ lion tiio bodies were recovered
the work of identification was very
difficult. Small pieces of bodies were
picked up ail over the place. Those
were not collected together, and many
sections of bodies were thrown back
into the debris, where they were
found.
The hole where the magu/.i ex¬
ploded m about 15 feet dec, and 50
yards square.
