SPENDING MILLIONS.
fliork of the Railroads in Build
ing New Industries.
In an article on progress and
prosperity of the South, the New
York Sun says that $340,000,0)0
have been invested in new indus
; trial enterprises in the Southern
| States the last three years. “Prob
I ably the greater part this can be
! traced either directly or indirect¬
ly to the work of the land find in
dustrial departments of the rail¬
roads,” says the Sun.
Every important road now has
its industrial and immigration
department with agents who are
constantly on the lookout for new
industries. Each road tries to get
all the new mills, factories, col¬
onies, farmers and truck growers
it can. The agents hunt for the
locations, and do all they can to
settle new people along their 1 ine.
The Atlantic Coast Line and the
Seaboard AirLinestarted tobacco
growing in the Carolinas. The
old Florida and Western pro¬
moted watermelon raising in
South Georgia. The Centrial of
Georgia encouraged peach grow ¬
ing in middle part of the State.
The Southern has paid special at¬
tention to the building of new
cottou mills in the t South just as
the L & N has encouraged the op¬
ening of coal and iron mines and
the building of furnaces.
A railroad will spend thous¬
ands of dollars on side tracks and
extentions to get a new industry
located.
In Atlanta the Southern is now
spending $25,000 to put a new
side track to a steel mill. A
week or so ago this same com¬
pany agreed fcp spend $230,000 on
an exteiJum tc reach some min¬
eral property which owners want
to develop. Other roads are do¬
ing the same things every week.
Ofcourse the roads expect to get a
benefit from the new industries
but it takes millions of money,
which they are willing to spend,
to develop and build up the
country.
All the roads want active in¬
telligent young men in their in¬
dustrial departments, the demand
being greater than the supply.
Like Finding Money.
Finding health Is like finding money—
so think those who are sick. When you
have a cough, cold, sore throat, or chest
irritation, bet ter act promptly like AY . C.
Barber, of Sandy Level, Va. He says:
“I bad a terrible chest trouble, caused by
smoke and coal dust on my lungs: but,
after finding no relief in other remedies,
1 was cured by Dr. King’s New Discovery

An Opportune Mi3t ak e.
We were at Saody Cross on
12th of July, where the pastor o
the Baptist Church, Brotbdrf
Hillman, had just closed a pro¬
tracted meeting. There was a
baptismal service at the pool clos
by, before service at the Meth
odist Church, which stands
close to the Baptist Church,
The writer went down to witness
the ceremony.
Brother Graham, our pastor
there, had invited a young Bap
tist brother by the name of Moody
to attend the quarterly confer
ence. Both of us were strangers
to nearly every one. We had been
introduced to Brother Hillman
shortly before we all assembled at
the pool. So Brother Moody and
the writer took a seat at a con¬
venient place near the pool at
the root of of a tree, Brother
Moody and Brother Graham
were standing up near Brother
Hillman, assisting in singing.*
When the singing ceased Brother
Hillman called on Brother
Moody to pray. As he is quite
a youug man, being about 21
years old, he was surprised and
and Bomewhat embrarrassed, bu
but prayed a short and appro
priate prayer. We were told late
that the Baptist pastor intended
to call on the Presiding Elder to
pray, but he got names confused
and called on Brother Moody.
We thought the mistake a very
oppor tune one.as Brother Moody
was a Baptist and prayed a very
appropate prayer for those “who
were about to follow Christ in
the ordnance of Baptism”. The
information given us explained
a remark we overheard a young¬
ster make earlier in the day say¬
ing. Brother Hillman jumped 011
that young fellow by mistake,
whereupon another said, “He
muse have thought we had a
mighty young Presiding Elder.”

The Marietta Journal says:
Loudness is the second crime in
masculine category of feminine
sins. A man may forgive a girl
for wearing pink chiffon to

a strong perfume; but he can
never pardon her for attracting
the attention cn the street or

the top of her voice, The girl
