THE ADVOCATE-DEMOCRAT.
—'Published Every Friday Morning by—
J. C. WILLIAMS.
Official Organ of Taliaferro County.
The editor ol the Alpharetta
Fr«e Press is a funny fellow.
Wonder if he is really in earnest.
Mr, 13. W. Boyd is now asso¬
ciated with Mr. H. B. Davenport
in the conduct of the Greene
County News.
Three new dwellings just com¬
pleted. and a new store building
in the course of erection, is not
bad for Crawfordville,
The Washington Reporter puts
Taliaferro's state and county
taxes down at $13. Wish 'twas
true. But the tax collector Bays
ho must have $15.
We do not consider that our
people are ungodly. You can’t
get'the noonday mail,have your
shoes ahined, buy a cigar or soda
water in Crawfordville Sundays.
Business is so good with the
Crawfordville Advocate Demo¬
crat that advertisements just
')ro-empted Jim Williams’ edito¬
rial page in the last issue and he
nad to content himself with a
column of notes ou the last page.
—AugURta Herald.
And this week we are forced
to print two extra pages.
We failed to receive following
weeklies last week: Ira Farmer’s
Progress, Jim Boykin’s Journal
and Toney’s Campbell News
—three of a kind. Send ’em
iu boys, We’re keeping tab on
you. _________
Every man who farms should
resolve right now to sow some
wheat. Prepare a few acres well
and make enough for aupplying
your farm. This is better than
buying it and will also help the
land. We are sure this is a good
advice whether our farmer
friends heed it or not.
Editor Howell Beazley says
than “an honest poor man is the
top rail to God's creation, and a
man is surely to be honored for
every Young America he has to
his credit. ” And yet. thinking
as he does. Howell refuses to be
bome a Benedict.
Editors Jim Williams, Ernest
Camp. Sam Small, and a whole
lot of others, have been tearing
their shirts for the ring candi¬
date.—Washington Reporter
We are willing to wager a gin¬
ger snap that this fellow has
been reading the Atlanta Jour¬
nal.
__
The Milledgeviile News says
hat the men who will elect
Clark Howell haven’t got busy
yet. Rather tough on Clark’s
editoiral gray matter, the
yelping of Jim Williams and
Ernest Camp.—Warrenton Clip
der.
We’ve known some folks
that didu't possess enough gray
matter in their craniums to even
work up a respectable “yelp.”
It is rumored around here that
Hoke Smith, realizing that he
cannot be elected governor, will
probably get out of the race. He
is losing very fast all over the
state.—Milleuegville News.
Wo bring Editor John Burke
to bear testimony that we advis¬
ed Hoke, several weeks ago, to
retire from the race. Glad to
know he has decided to take our
advice.
Not on a Charity Basis.
The Warrenton Clipper says
that “at a recent editorial con¬
vention a thoughtful and far¬
sighted clergymen arose and
offered a toast in which, among
other things, saidr ‘To save an
editor from starving, take his
paper and pay for it promptly;
to save him from bankruptcy ad¬
vertise liberally in his paper,”
etc., etc. We propose to disagree
with the Clipper, We do not
think that “a far-sighted and
thoughtful clergymen” at ail.
We want people to take this pa«
per because it is worth the
small sum we charge for it.
and we want advertisers
because it will pay to advertise
in the paper. We are not yet on
a charity basis. That’s all !
The Need of Tax Assessors.
We firmly believe that Talia¬
ferro should have a board of tax
assessors, and the next grand
jury should appoint them. If
this i.i done the amount of taxa¬
ble property can be increased,
and the tax rate thereby lowered.
It appears, lrorn the special com¬
mittee’s report, that a great
many tax payers, who have
been giving in their property at
a fair valuation before, dropped
back with those who give in
their property at about one third
its valno. We desire to see all
property given in at its true val¬
uation.
Couldn’t Fool Parson Brooks.
We asked Editor Brooks why
ho stopped sending us tho San
dorsville Herald, and here is
what he said:
We enjoy reading your excel¬
lent paper vory much, Brother
Williams, and desire you to have
ours.
The Herald and the Advocato
Democrat should think a whole
lot of each other. They were the
only two weekly papers in the
Tenth district not to recognize
the fact that the "Divine candi
date” had been called to save
the state, Brooks is a good
preacher, and knows all about
those kind of calls. But the
funuy part about it is that Par
san Atkinson, of the Harlem
Sentinel, had the spurious article
worked off on him.

An Able Defense.
We publish iu this issue, an
editorial from the Oglethorpe
Echo, in defense of Judge Ham
ilton McWhorter. We do so at
the request of prominent friends
of Judge McWhorter in Ogle¬
thorpe county. To those of our
citizens who know the genial
judge, this defense is unneces¬
sary. But there may be those
who hav e taken cognizance of the
attacks by Hoke Smith, and the
editorial will serve to enlighten
them as to the motives of the at¬
tack and the true character o
Judge McWhorter as told by a
true Georgian, and on who
knows whereof he speaks.
