Don’t ‘•knock!”
The man who makes nothing
but money is poorly paid.
Christianity and churchianity
are as wide apart as the poles.
The man whose creed excuses
ur shortcomings is a welcome
evangelist.
The world judges a man by
what he makes; Cod judges him
by what he does.
Atlanta is to have a prohibi¬
tion election. It would bo real
bad to do away with Hoke’s
•‘charity palacj”
Iu our candid opinion the Hoke
Smi th breed of reformers are do¬
ing their pushing for reform
against the broechstraps.
Easily Satisfied.
Editor Jim Williams says that
the Washington Reporter Hoke re¬
fuses to be classed in the
Smith list. But to our mind the
Reporter shows a decided Hoke
Smith leaning and we are well
satisfied with its position as de¬
fined by the expressions of its
editorial page.—Lincoln Home
Journal.
Editor Boykin is mighty easily
satisfied—but, we’ve been think¬
ing that way since he declared
his preference for governor.
Hold for 11 Cents.
President Johnson, of the
Georgia Division of the Southern
Cotton Association, has issued a
strong statement, urging the
cotton growers of Georgia to hold
their cotton for the minimum
price of 11 cents per pound, as
fixed by the Association. He
also appeals to unorganized
counties to join the movement
and not let it be said of them
that they have reaped the beSe
iits without doing their part of
tho work.
We learn by grapevine that
Tom Loyloss got his bellyful of
ome folks in assisting them to
carry Georgia for Parker.
The Sayannah Press opines
that Dosh Massungale will prob
ably run lor governor against
Joe Hall, if the latter decides to
enter the arena.
By a small margin the local
taxation movement in Hancock
county failed to go through. At
Siloam, Greene county, it went
through by a vote of 511 to 2.
We are unable to diagnose the
condition of Editor Sul Lewis.
We are inclined to the belief,
however, that a liberal use of
Dr. Tutt’s liver medicine would
have u wonderful effect.
Bytheway, Hoke tried to give
some of his “blood money” to Dr.
Broughton recently. The par¬
son, said, in effect: “If it is too
dirty for your bauds, don’t offer
it to me. ”
Mrs. Myrick, of tho Americus
Times Recorder, is mad with our
popular Congressman. Tom is
a regular Chesterfield, and we
can’t understand why the lady
should not like him.
Tho farmers of Georgia have
not made up their minds as to
whom they will cast their votes
for governor, but we’ll wager a
bunch of “mud cats” they do
not vote for Piorpont Morgan’s
agent iu this state.
Taliaferro has several farmers
those corn cribs are never
empty. This year’s corn crop
is splendid, and very little grain
should timl its way into the
county iu the next twelve
months.
Tho Crawfordvillo Advocate
Democrat says that only a few
years ago lloke Smith was tame
enough to go up and eat out of
tho hands of the railroads, but
now, like Boseo, the snake man,
wants to “eat ’em alive.”—
Brunswick 1 ournal.
Dr. A A Davidson, of An
gusla. has been elected second
vice president of the Tri State
Medical Society. The society
met in Chattanooga Friday. Dr.
Davidson is a native of Talia¬
ferro. and we congratulate him
ou his deserved honor.
An Expert.
Editor Toney, of the Campbell
News, only resides about fifteen
miles from Hoke’s oar, and must
know what ne is talking about
when he says: “If everybody in
Georgia, who patronizess the
bars will vote for Hoke Smith,
there will be no question as to
his overwhelming election.” We
are willing to accept Brother
Toney as an expert on anything
concerning a bar.
Insonsistency and Hypocrisy
No, Josephine; Hoke Smith is
not being condemned for owning
an interest in a barroom, for an
entire lot of us would own the
bar, muscadine gal and all if we
could. But, the point is: He is
posing as a temperance advocate
a-Sd-S-rtndary school lecturer and
running the bar at the same
time. But the world is full of
just such inconsistency and
hypocrisy.
Wo are pleased to know that
very few former populists, in
this county, are supporting
Hoke Smith. Such men as the
disciple of Wall street forced
them to cut loose from the or
ganized Democracy, and they
cannot „ repudiate their former
action by alligning themselves
with that element of the Demo¬
cratic party now.
FOR BOTH
One disease of thinness in
children is scrofula; in nilults,
consumption. Both have poor
blood ; both need more fat.
'Pliose diseases thrive on lean¬
ness. Fat is the best means of
overcoming them; cod liver oil
makes the best and healthiest
fat and
SCOTT’S
EMULSION
is the easiest and most effective
form of cod liver oil. Here’s a
natural order of things that
shows why Scott’s Emulsion is
of so much value in all eases of
scrofula and consumption. More
fat. more weight, more nourish¬
ment. t hat s why.

Hard Up for Argument.
Our old friend. Jim Williams,
of the Crawfordvillo Advocate
Democra t, whien by the way, is
the only weekly paper in thm
section of the state giving its
snpport to the Captain of the
Sunshine Brigade, and published
in tho only county in this section
of the state showing a
in taxable property, ha9 once or
twice-discovered the slate in the
Tenth district, but each time
finds that he is on the wrong
traiE
The above is am extract from
an editorial in Ira Farmer’s Mc¬
Duffie Progress, published week
before ,ast. We don’t know why
Ira failed to send us that issue
of his japer, unless he did not
want ut to see it till he could
get in t s announcement for the
State S^iate, which ho hastened
to do in a- last issue. He was,
doubtless, afraid we would reply
by statitg that he was “slated”
for the Senate. We heard over
a month tgo that he was to be a
caudidatt but we would not have
been ubmrd enough to have
said he was “slated.” That par¬
ticular shte had its
In Ira’s ‘think tank.”
But we had a suspicion that
Ira was ecpecting the “call” to
strike him sooner or later. If the
public wil take notice they will
see that tiese rampant Hokeites
either wait a political job or
have lost rut trying to got one.
But what in tho hail Columbia
has the dee:, ase in Taliaferro’s
taxable property to do with
whom we support for governor?
The allusion is far-fetehed, and
demonstrate! that the “Divine
call’s” newspaper supporters are
mighty ha: up for argument,
but it is on if in keeping with
their mode 4 political attack.
Surely Ira does not mean
to charge * the “Captain”
with being r* sible for the
^eijj^asn, - jj
system in this county permits
taxpayers to give in their
property at just any old
price. The Captain had just as
well be charged with the yellow
fever outbreak at New Orleans
The Progress states further
that Hon. John West will not be
a “candidate for any office in the
elections of next year." Col.
Dosh Massengale says he will
not be a candidate for anything
for several years.”
From the above it would ap¬
pear that we merely pulled the
fruit most too early.
But, since Ira has decided to
come out and weigh himself
among his constituency for the
senate from the 29th district in
the next primary, notwithstand¬
ing the fact that he hit his
“mammy” county a lick below
the belt, in the above extract,
the county will be leuieut to its
son, and all wish for his success
in tho senatorial contest.
