ME ADVOCATE-DEMOCRAT.

God reaches down only as far
as you aro willing to reach up.
The man who makes nothing
but money goes out of the world
destitute.
Hoka htjd to “call” with a
“bob tail” flush and found the
other fellow with four aces.
W. R. Hearst has been nomi¬
nated mayor of New York. Has
that any significance for 1908?
Hoke is now on his good be
havior in| order to live down his
bad record,
Some people who cast bread
on the water yesterday wa.-jie all
of today waiting tor a bakery to
float back to them.
The editor of the Alpharetta
Free Press seems to have an
enlarged vision and an inflamed
imaignatiou.
Watson had been bought out
right. Smith is ati astute lawyer,
aa< * ** new that if he directly
made the charge, and the papers
so quoted him, Watson would
iiave cause to hold him respon
sible for for defamation of char
dam¬
age suit on his hands.
Hence, while the charge
was not made. technically
speaking, it was made to
all tense and purposes and, evi¬
dently, nad its effect.
Mr. Watson, if our memory
serves us correctly, made the
direct charge that Parkers’ nom¬
ination was purchased—that it
was cheaper to purchase the
nomination than it would be to
defeat Bryan or Hearst at the
polls. And Mr. Smith, in turn,
handed it back to Mr. Watson in
words just as strong.
In other parts of the speech,
Mr. Smith spoke of Mr. Watson
in a very disparaging manner,
ridiculing him for making cer¬
tain other statements.
But, if Mr. Watson is satisfied
with Mr. Smith’s attitude, we
have no right to complain. As
a delegate to the State Conveu
j tutu which elected presidential
delegates to the St. Louis con¬
vention, we supported Congress¬
man Grigge, who was the only
candidate for delegate opposed
to Parkers nomination. When
Parker received the nomination,
Brilliant Bill Howard is back
from the Orient, and has
interesting things to tell of what
he saw.
The next candidate who makes
p pen is TlTfTfnr proSSl'V&iiort of
the state’s honor would do well
to consider his record pertaining
to the questions at issue,
It is pretty tough on Southern
policy holders in the big insure
aneo companies to be compelled
'to pay the salaries of Republi
cau grafters. We should have
Southern life insurance com p

Mr. John H. Stephens, writing
10 us from Vienna, among other
things, says; "The paper corns
(ike aleiier from home, and it is
read with a gieat deal of pleas¬
ure by my family and my seif.
By u he way, I want to congrat¬
ulate you on the paper generally,
but more especially on your edi¬
torial page.”
If the editor of the Warrenton
Clipper doesn’t look out he’ll 1
get mad and say something real 1
bad before the gubernatorial
campaign is over. Keep your;
temper, Dowling, and have a loti
of fun with the press boys. :
The man who laughs his way
through the world gets more out
of it than the mau who fights
his way through.
Hoke says ho got his present
principles from the Farmers'
Alliance, and the Augusta Trib ¬
une is cruel enough to remind
him that he aud his
organ, the Atlanta Journal, in
olden days, never let a day pass
without delivering a stab at the
Alliance. Hoke is too old to
learn new tricks aud, deep down
in his heart, he is just as much
against the farmers now as he
wasiu those old Alliance days.
HSR. WATSON AND HIS
“SYMPATHIES.*’
Hon. Thos. E. Watson has
stated in his magazine tnat he
is in sympathy with Hon Hoke
Smith for governor. For the
benefit of those interested, we
make the following extract from
the speech delivered by Mr.
Smith in Augusta the night be¬
fore the last presidential elec
tion:
•‘The charge has been made
throughout the state that the
nomination of the candidates of
the Democratic party were pur
cnased by Wall street. I was
interested ; n the election of the
national delegation from Geor
gilt, and in the St. Lonis conven¬
tion I took an active part, and I
am prepared to siate unequivi
cally that every such statement
is untrue. It is further charged
ibut Watson is in the hire of the
RepubJcan party to make the
race for president on the Popu¬
list ticket. I bring no such
charge against him. But I do
say this, that there is just as
much truth in the statement
that Watson was bought to
make the race there by Republi¬ is the
can money- as in
statement that eastern money
bought Parker’s nomination.
(Cheers.)
Now, Mr. Smith did not make
tho ch.argis directly that Mr.
With a governor of
pire State of the\ South favoring
a Qontinaauce lof bowiDg
kneeling et the fleet of Morgan,
Belmont. McCalf- et al., how
will the Georgia Democracy ever
throw off the n binds it
to x' ^. T hitrari t .
If those people who state
that they are tired of the north
dictating as to who they shall
vote for, are in real earnest,
they cannot better illustrate it
than by casting their vote
against the disciple of Cleve
landism and ,semi-Republican¬
ism.
Whenever you scratch a Cleve
landite you will find a Hokeite.
It is one and the same, and tbe
boosting of Hoke Smith for the
governorship is more for the
purpose of keeping alive that
plutocratic sentiment in the Dem¬
ocratic party than for any other
season. And we believe the eue
mies of the party in Georgia are
laughing iu their sleeves, and
ti aiding thut the Georgia Dem¬
ocracy will continue to be join¬
ed to its ittols.
With a ctntiuued allignment
of Southern Democracy with
that of Wall street plutocracy
and Hamiltoniuuism, the true
Democrats will have a just

Democracy we did all we could
1 )U * ^ ie COUQ ty i n the Demo
vTatic column. We felt that we
were right and have no apologies
to offer. Developments have
since led us to believe that Wat¬
son was a better Democrat than
Parker or Hoke Smith either.
We have stated publicly that we
believed that Mr. Watson was
right wheu he charged Bel
inont with “tricking" Southern
Democratic leaders into favor ¬
ing Parkers’ nomination.
And, we had hoped that
Mr. Watson, if he could not
• sympathize” with the
nents of Hoke, would hands
off aud watch us Bryau
ocrats knock the stuffing
out of the first Morgan repre¬
sentative that we had a chance
to hit.
But, since Mr. Watson says
his “sympathies” aro with
Hoke, we hardly know where
we are “at” at* between Hoke
Smith, the plutocrat, Jeffersonian and ^Dem¬ Tom
Watson, the
ocrat.
It is our purpose to show that
Hoke Smith haf* been the most
bitter oppouent that Tom Wat¬
son has ever ®nad in Georgia.
That, even had Mr. Watson and
his followers contained to
make their ftghit inside the par¬
ty, they would Iiave been oppos¬
ed by the Cleveland sentiment,
which in Georgia means Hoke
smithism.
We are free to say that this
latter sentiment] is the rock upon
which the Democratic party has
been wrecked, ntnd the old ship
is now floating its a derelict on
the national political sea.
Just after Purker's defeat a
great howl went up against the
Eastern faction of the Demo¬
cratic party. Aiud. now, some
