A special from Greensboro.
(Ga., to the Atlanta Constitution
jsays:
“Some seven years ago a
young man left Greensboro, who
was not endowed with any of
fortuune’s richer, but had plenty
of pluck, perseverance and ener¬
gy. At the outbreak of the
Spanish -American war he enlist¬
ed in the United States army,
where he did valiant service in
Cuba, and was promoted rapidly
in his company, and transferred
to the Philippine service. Here
he remained until the cessation
of hosstiliVies, and when the war
was over, decided to try his suc¬
cess in the business world of the
Philippines. He has done ex¬
ceedingly well and has amassed
quite a fortune. He has just
returned home and is receiving
the hearty greeting of his
friends.
In speaking of his return
home, The Manila Town Topics,
one of the leading papers of the
islands, has this to say:
“Thomas! Reid, the merchant
prince of Dagupan, after six
year's stay in the islands, left on
steamship China last Monday for
his old horpe in Georgia. Mr.
i Reid canoe Tp the Philippines
as
a sergeant' in General Jakey
Klein’s Twenty-first infantry,
with which regiment he lias also
seen service in Cuba. After his
term of iulistment had expied,
Mr. Reid Concluded that the
Philippines was a good enough
country for him to buck fortunes
game in, and Dagupan, the cap¬
ital city of Lingayen prov nee,
was selected as the place where
the struggle should commence.
Mr. Reid had saved up a few
b career, uvidgjGaS *,•„ w&s popular dpnin#s. with is-army
cer¬
tain of Manila’a business men,
with wborr. ho had come in
contact, and lie had no trouble in
getting all tjie credit he needed.
Mr. Reid started a hotel in Dagu
pau and later followed it up by
establishing a general merchan¬
dise store. Success was his
from the start, and the name of
Reid became known to almost
all of the residents of northern
Luzon. The building of the
great Benquet highway did
much to add Mr. Reid’s success,
and to swell his growing bank
account.
“He is today a director of the
Lingayen bank, a partner in a
company which is putting np a
large sugar mill near Dagupan,
and is owner of much valuable
real estate in the islands.
“Mr. Reid was born in Craw
fordville, Ga., somewhere in the
early seventies. He expects to
be gone from the islands about
six months; returning to the
Philippines about the 1st of next
year. ”

Vinol is deliciously palatable, agreeable to the weakest stom¬
