PENSIONS FOR
MILLIONAIRES
tt UQ.XOwCtcJ RfSult of PrJSidcilHs
Service Order of Last Year.
RICH KEN ARE INCLUDED
Commissioner Alien Sees N) Onjrctioa
to Paying in Such Cases, as He
Believes I: Will Go to Charity.
A Washington special says: Pen
sloes for millionaires, is one of the
new developments under the execu¬
tive order of lajst year,
According to Commission of Pen
sions Warner, the application of a
millionaire for a pension has been
recently favorably passed upon. He
did not want the psti.cn, according to
the commissioner, on account of the
money it carried with it, but simply
to perfect his record of honorable
service in the civil war.
This view of the disability order is
being taken by many well-to-do veter
arts who would not otherwise apply for
pensions. The fact that they are eli
gible and performed the service stip
Mated in behalf of the government
and that the government is to recog
nize this service by a pension and the
accompanying records of the sa.nie
make the service pension a desirable
addition to the family records.
The commissioner does not look up¬
on this class of pensions as an un
desirable burden for the government
to boar. He takes the view that the
i funds distributed is used by the ap
j plicant to relieve want. In the case
of the millionaire pensioner, he has
I knowledge that the recipient has just
; made a bequest of a hundred thousand
dollars for benevolent purposes.
PACKERS RESORT TO NEW TRICK.
: Immunity Claimed Under an Alleged Agree¬
ment With Garfield.
A Chicago dispatch says: Complete
immunity from prosecution under the
pending Indictment returned by the
federal grand Jury several months ago
is the claimed by J. Ox-rtStf rmmr. viA
other defendant packers and
agents charged with being promoters
of the so-called ‘‘beef trust” In ad¬
ditional pleas in bar, filed Friday af¬
ternoon by Attorney .Tohn S. Miller,
the packers' representative.
The new plea, which came as a
complete surprise to the government,
sets up as facts that when Secretary
Garfield of the department of com¬
merce and labor, investigated the
trusts, he promised the packers that
whatever testimony they gave with¬
out being under cat.b, or whatever
documentary evidence they voluntarily
produced, the defendants should have
| the same rights, indemnities and im¬
munities as if they had testified un
der oath and compulsion.
Under this new plea, Attorney Mil¬
ler hopes to establish the fact that
there was an agreement between the
packers and the government that they
should testify and give evidence with¬
out being subpenaed or the oath ad¬
ministered, hut that as far as immuni¬
ty was concerned, it should be con¬
sidered as if they had hen subpenaed
and took the oath.

WOMAN BALLOONIST KIHID.
Dropped Trom High Altitude! and is Dashed
to Instant Death.
At Anderson, S. O., Thursday af¬
ternoon, Mrs. Maude Broad wick, wife
f Charles Broad wick, an aeronaut
with Bidder's southern carnival com¬
pany, fell from a balloon, high in air,
and was instantly killed.
Mrs. Broad wick was an experienc¬
ed balloonist herself and had made
two ascensions. Her husband was tc
make the ascension and parachute
drop Thursday, and she was standing
by to give the signal to cut the ropes
when all was ready.
She gave the signal all right, and
when the balloon shot up into the ait
she was seen hanging to tho ropes bo
tween tho balloon and tho parachute.
After she had reached >a distance ol
200 or 300 feet she dropped to the
earth, striking on the hard ground,
and was instantly killed. About 1,000
persons witnessed the tragedy.
Broad wick, who was fastened into
the parachute with a belt, went up
some distance higher and then cut
loose and descended in safety.
Most of the carnival people arc- in
dined to the opinion that Mrs. Broad
wick’s death was due to suicide rather
than an accident.. They say Broadvriclt
and his wife had been quarreling for
a week or more, and this, together
with the fact that she was an experi¬
enced aeronaut, and there were no
projecting ropes about the balloon
harness liable to entangle a person,
lead them to the suicide theory.
