V/rt01:3 ABOUT ANGELS.
New York Zt-':r. Clergyman Proves
That They’re All Males.
Kc a..tics i.j l . Is city arc recov¬
er ing from the shock caused by the
tlkircvery cf an up-S:a;e
ihat for at ieasr six centuries tne
world of art and theology has been
biundering about the sex of angels.
in the f::;tenth entury Fra Angel
ieo depictei women angels. In all :h •
centuries that have elapsed until the
Building Committee, accompanied by
clergymen from other pans of the
State, went to view the unfinished
cathedral of St. John the Divine on
Morningslde Heights, art and theol¬
ogy have continued to blunder.
There are about four plaster cast
statues of angels in the Belmont
Memorial Chapel of the cathedral,
The clergy were admiring them when
the up-State clergyman stopped be¬
fore two statues, and broke the si¬
lence with this:
"Whoever heard of a woman an¬
gel?”
The clergy gasped; then the truth
dawned upon them. For hundreds of
years all over the world art had be *s
depicting angels as female and in no
place in the Bible could it be ascer¬
tained that angels were otiTer than
male.
"It was the most amusing thing I
ever heard,’ said the Rev. Dr. John
P. Peters of St. Michael’s, who is
Secretary of. the Building Commit¬
tee. "When I realized it i shouted!
To think that for centuries ecclesias¬
tics regarded angels, theologically, as
men, that art aH these centuries
regarded them, picturesquely, as wo¬
men, and that no one should have
ticed the glaring inconsistency.”
Then Dr. Peters went to dinner.
assistant took up the discussion
where Dr. Peters had left off.
“How can any ore tell the sex rf
angels,’ said lie. "1 have never seen
one. Those whq have—the shepherds
who lay in the fields—were too fright¬
ened to notice whether they
male or female. And no one has ever
come back to tell us about Azrael.
Ecclesiastical liistcry prefers To
gard them as an unknown
something which is singularly
ferred to as ‘he,’ so that, oar intelji
gence may grasp something tangible,
But it will always be a moot point,
even the color of ang.l-, for I hav*
heard that in the South Bibles
circulated in which the angels in
illustrations are black.”
“We prefer to havo our . ang 1
statues of no pronounced sex,” said
Dr. Peters after dinner. ‘That_was.
»nVm with the St. Joan statues.
Gabriel, the outgo! of the Annuncia¬
tion, was presumably a male, but tho
other—the Angel of the Resurrection
—may or may not have been. It is
not stated. I understand that Mr.
Mathe-Borglum, the sculptor, has
agreed to make Gabriel a male, leav¬
ing the other practically as it is.”
J. Guntzer Mathe-Borglum, when
asked about the trouble, said that he
was an artist and would make the
statues any sex that was wanted. Per¬
sonally, ho believed that angels
ought always to be women—New
York Times.
Good Boys at $160 Per Year.
The cost of a school for the develop¬
ment of good boys is thus stated by
Eugene Wood in tiis article, “A School
for Boys,” in Everybody’s.
"it costs the State of Ohio about
$160 a year for each boy. A useful,
capable man is worth to society, on
tho average, $10,000. These 11,000
boys cost the State of Ohio, then, say
$2,000,000. Say 7,000 of them were
rescued. That is $70,000,000 recovered
to society on tltp investment of $2,000,
000. It has been figured that every
criminal does about $2,000 damage a
year, leaving entirely out of the esti¬
mate what it costs to maintain our
plant for the demotion, prevention and
punishment of crime. Each man will
he a criminal not less than twenty
icars. That's $-10,000 damages multi¬
plied by 7,000 boys, or $280,000,000
damages saved, n t counting the cost
of the an'.i-trrnnial plant. Has it
paid to run this Boys' Industrial
School at J.a tiers or?
"And oven if ; t huln’t paid finan¬
cially isn't it worth while?”
