Statistics in Manufacturers' Record
Show Increase of 66 Per Cent
Over Last Year.

breadstuffs is shown in the latest is

breadstuff exports from this country
increased over that of the preceding

cent.
The increase at leading southern
ports was from $30,015,517 in 1004,
to $50,049,696 In 3005, or hy $20,034,
J79, equal to 00 per cent.
“Six southern ports — Baltimore,
Newport Nows, Norfolk Portsmouth,
Galveston, Mobile and New Orleans—
exported more than a third of the
total exports, anil the increase in
value of their exports was move than
57 per cent of the Increase at all
ports.

to accommodate. !t is that of road
from Kentucky, West Virginia and
Virginia to the great lakes, and two
or three plans for lines northward
from nature's great store houses of
fuel in those three states will prob¬
ably be realized in a few years bv

famine Prevails in Northern Japan Owing
to Failure ol Crops.
According to information received
at the Japanese legation in Washing¬
ton the northern provinces of Japan
are suffering from a severe famine
which only the quickest relief will be
able to check.
The Information shows that the rice ;
crop this year has been about 15 per ,
cent of the average crop and that a i
famine has ensued in three northern j
provinces, which have altogether a j
population of about 2.700,000.

•Sheriff Crowe of Hail county, Geor¬
gia, with ids prisoner, Rev. J. W. Aus¬
tin, who remained over in Atlanta
Saturday tight to avoid a reported
mob at. Buford, left Atlanta Sunday
raorning and the prisoner is now in¬
carcerated in the county jail at Gaines
vilie. Austin, who was for two years
pastor of the Methodist church at
Beliton, near Gainesville, and who re
-reu from the North Georgia Con¬
ference at its last session, Is under
the charge of having made an at¬
tempt to poison Hon. Bob Quiilian of
Bell ton by means of a medicated ap¬
ple hand, 1 the latter by the minis¬
ter while both were at a camp meet¬
ing at poplar Springs in Banks coun¬
ty late last summer.
After Austin is alleged to have
handed Mr. Quiilian the apple, he
mounted the platform and preached
the afternoon sermon at the camp
meeting. During the discourse, Mr.
Quiilian was seized with a desperate
illness, and it was only by the imme
diate use of emetics that his life was
saved.
A few months later Austin resign¬
ed from the conference and suddenly
left Hall county.
About the same time the wife of
Mr. Quiilian left her home and has
not been since seen in Gainesville or
Rellton.
The warrant against Austin was
shortly afterwards sworn out by Mr.
Quiilian. The only charge was at¬
tempting to poison.
It was reported that Austin had
gone to New York city, and vigorous
attempts to locate him failed.
He appeared, however, in Lawreuee
vllle, Gu., a few days ago, and Sher¬
iff Martin of Gwinnett county notified
Sheriff Crowe of Hall. The latter
went to Lawrenceville Saturday, ac¬
companied by George and Turner QuH
Man of Bellton, brothers of Bob Quib
llan, and took Austin into custody.
They reached Atlanta with him Sat¬
urday night, and remained In (he city
on the strength of a telegram from
IT. Dillard of Athens, who wired that
a mob bad gathered at Buford to seize
Austin.

ly dismissed from the United States
naval academy for hazing plots.
