Official Organ of Taliaferro County.
Crawfordville, Ga., June 29, KKj(i,
Do you want the negro to con¬
tinue as the political equal of the
white man? If so, don’t vote for
Hoke Smith. He is the one can¬
didate in the race for governor
who is in favor of disfranchise¬
ment.—Lincoln Home Journal.
Tha first step toward accom¬
plishing any reform in Georgia
is to disfranchise the negro.
Then make up your mind to do
what you can towards putting
things in better shape in this
State
They do say that Jim Smith
sent a good many cotton seed in¬
to Taliaferro to iniluetice the
voters when primary time rolls
round. Taliaferro county’s
white citizens have not been in
the habit of selling their votes.
Every white man in Taliaferro
county knows that one of the
greatest benefits that could come
to this county and to the State of
Georgia would be the disfran¬
chisement of the negro. There
is only one candidate in the race
who wants to take the ballot
from the negro.
It has been known for some
time by those who have closely
watched the political situation
that the ClarkHowell ringcrowd
would concentrate all their
strength in the effort to carry
Taliaferro county for whichever
one of Hoke Smith’s opponents
would be most likely to carry the
county. They are trying to fool
the people into voting f or jj m
Smith.
There are several Southern
States which have passed laws
to correct the evil brought about
by Thad Stevens and his gang
when the ballot was given to the
negro. The wisest and best men
of the States that have enacted
such legislation say that the dis¬
franchisement plan works even
better than was anticipated and
has been a great blessing to their
States. Why should the Empire
State of the South lag so far be¬
hind her sister States in this mat¬
ter ol securing to the white citi¬
zens undisputed control of gov¬
ernmental affairs. ?
Some people have got into
lire habit of sayiug that there is
no doubt about Hoke Smith be¬
ing the choice of the vast major¬
ity of the citizens for Governor
of Georgia but that the politi
cians will defeat him in spite of
the people. Now, this is sup
posed to be a government by
llie people, and the people are
going to be heard from this year.
There is no doubt about the fact
-verythmsun tliea- power to
feat Hoke Smith, and from now
till the primary you mav - expect
to hear any sort of untruth,
Some of those fellows have a
wonderful faculty of making
wrong to look like right and right
to to look look like like wron wrotr- 0 , but but the the clear cleat
headed, strong minded, honest; clouds
voter will see through the
skillful that are sleight-of-nand conjured up perform by these j 1
-
ers and pe ceive truth and ritht
that shine through the clouds ol
doubt. This effort to turn
the voters of Taliaferro
county away from the only
candidate who promises the
people anything, to Jim Smith is
nothing in the world but one of
the schemes of the ringsters to
carry out their purpose of defeat¬
ing Hoke Smith at any cost.
