SOUTHWEST
\ The Land Of BiG CROPS and
PROSPERITY.
Are you making as much off your farm as you ought? No doubt you are
making all you can. The trouble is the land cost too much, It takes too much mon¬
ey to buy a big farm, and so you afe trying to mak a living on a small farm, or
perhaps you are renting one and paying a good share of what you raise, in rent.
Wouldn.t it be better to go where the price of gcod laud is so litlle that you can
own a big farm—where every acre of ground is working for you and all you rai9e is
paying you good profits?
There are thousands of acres of fertil land in the Southwest the line of the
Cotton Belt Route that can be bought for from $3 to $10 an acre. This land is in¬
creasing in value each year.

Leaving Crawfordville Sunday after¬
noon with my little brother, Donald,
the writer went to Atlanta to join the
party of “Ediiors” going to Hartwell
to attend the convention of the Geor¬
gia Weekly Press /m Association. We
spent Sunday nighg Atlanta, and
Monday morning was spent in seeing
some of the points of interest in the
“Metropolis of the South.”
Monday afternoon we boarded the
Southern train for Toccoa, finding
that the management of the road had
placed three cars at our disposal for
the entire trip. Passing through
some beautiful North Georgia country
where everything looked prosperous,
we reached Toccoa, about 5:00 P. M.
Our cars were switched onto the Toc¬
coa & Elberton branch and reaching
Bowersville we were transferred to
the Hartwell Railroad, which landed
us at tlie beautiful little city of Hart¬
well about. 9:00 P. M. After being
shown to the home assigned to us, and

were served and a delightful time was
spent. The court house was decorated
with Hags, streamers, and electric
lights and presented a very pretty ap¬
pearance. We spent Monday night at
the Palace Hotel, owned by Mr. A. F.
Hunt, which was our headquarters at
Hartwell.
Tuesday morning the convention
was called to order by tho President,
The address of welcome and keys of
the city were delivered by Judge Hod,
of the city court, which was responded
to by Mrs. Jno. N. Holder, her hus¬
band, who was to have made the re¬
sponse, being detained by business.
After going through the routine of
business and finishing up some impor¬
tant business the session was adjourn¬
ed at noon.
In the afternoon a ball game was on
docket, but J. Pluvius uncorked his
vials and droned it out.
At 7:00 P. M. a delicious barbecue
was served at the court house, im¬
mediately after which the convention
was again called to order. Papers and
addresses by different parties on in¬
teresting subjects were, had. Wit and
repartee were much in evidence and
served to make the evening pass oil'
pleasantly. An eloquent and touch¬
ing appeal by Rev. Ab Harris, former¬
ly of this county, in behalf of the Mum
ford Memorial Orphanage brought a
generous response from those present.
Wednesday morning the last busi¬
ness session was held. Officers
were elected for the following year,
and Samlersville was selected as the
place of meeting for 1907. All busi¬
ness being finished, tin' Convention,
after an enthusiastic rising vote of
thanks to Hartwell for the generous
entertainment received, adjourned, to
meet next year.

miles out, where we were served an¬
other fine Georgia barbecue. Skating
and dancing were indulged in by some
of the party. Some of the party spent
the night at Franklin Springs and
some returned to Royston, where they
were entertained by the private fami¬
lies. The writer and brother were the
guests of Mr. Guy Tucker, one of Roy
ston’s substantial citizens.
Leaving Royston Thursday morning
we started on the outing through
North Carolina and Tennessee, where
will leave the party until next week.
Hartwell is a beautiful little city
of some 3,000 inhabitants. Jt is built
on a very fertile plateau where every
farm product raised in Georgia will
thrive. There are several manufactu¬
ring enterprises here, and altogether
it is a growing, prosperous town.
They can boast of having electric,
lights; pretty, well shaded streets;
a fine court house, and the, pleasantest,
most hospitable people imaginable.
Under the guidance of Mr. It. 11. Wil¬
cox, Chairman of the, Reception Gopi
mittee, everything was so arranged as
to pass off very smoothly, despite the
continued rains.
At Royston we were met by Mr.
T. (i. Borough, the genial Editor and
Proprietor of the Royston Record, who
took charge of the writer and brother.
We were presented with tickets to the
ball game, and after it was over Mr,
Borough drove us out to Franklin
Springs, a popular health resort which
is growing in favor. The resort is the
property of Mr. L. (J. Brown, who is
making quite a success with it.
Royston is a typical North Georgia
town. Pretty streets, pretty dwellings
and substantial brick business houses.
It is building up rapidly.
