The party left Roys,ton Thursday
morning, and after traveling about 12
hours, reached Lake Toxaway, N. C.
Some, very pretty views were to be had
from the cars while passing through
South Carolina and a portion of
North Carolina. The road is built on
a ridge a good portion of the way,
and looking north and northwest, many
miles away, we saw the Blue Ridge
mountains rising grand and pictur¬
esque.', and nearer and beneath us fer¬
tile valleys with good crops of corn, etc.
Very little cotton was seen along here,
and farther up it disappeared entirely.
Short stops were made at Greenville
and Spartanburg. At the latter place
we were transferred to another branch
of the Southern Ry., which carried us
to Hendersonville, N. C., where we i

were again switched onto another line
going direct to ioxaway. Greenville
and Spartanburg are pretty little cities
built among the hills. The scenery is
very pretty in all this part of the state :
foiling lands, fertile valleys and far

Ridge mountains.
Going up to Toxaway the road is
built right into the midst of the moun¬
tains. At some places the grade is so
steep that two of the largest type of
freight engines are required to carry
up a train of 4 passenger Coaches. At
one point where there is a'long, gradual
they have in operation a system
of safety tracks. Where there is a con¬
venient place a switch is placed and a
spur track laid back up the mountain j I
side. When a train passes, the switch
is thrown open and in case a car brakes
loose it will run back down the track,
tak<> th(> *P»r and climbing up the hill
| will gradually come to a standstill.
Nothing in this section, except moun¬
tains; with an occasional farmhouse.
Lake Toxaway is a summer resort in
the strictest sense. One store, with
the postoffice combined, a railroad
station, the lake and palatial “Tox
laway Inn” with its attached buildings,
make the town. This is a very beau¬
tiful place in the heart of the Saphire
Country of North Carolina. Here, on
the summit of Mt Toxaway, one can
experience the sensation of being
above the Clouds. The mountain is
5000 ft. above the sea level. w’e were
told that the syndicate owning this
property had expended the sum of $4,
000,000 in developing this country,
there being 5 other hotels in these
mountains belonging to the same
company.
The association was slated for 3
days here, bu.t some for one reason
and others for other reasons decided
not to stay so lorjg, so on Friday after¬
noon sixteen of the party, including
Donald and myself, boarded the cars
for Asheville. We reached there
about 8 o’clock Friday afternoon, and
went direct to Battery Park Hotel, one
of the most famous in the city. This
is a noted summer resort and the ac¬
commodation is very good. Friday
night was spent here. A delightful
little trip to Riverside Park was enjoy¬
ed by our little party Friday night.
Saturday morning we engaged a Tally
ho, which seated '14 of the party, and
were driven out to liiltmore. Mr. Geo.
Vanderbuilt’s estate, which is one of
the finest estates in the south, and
where lie spends part of his time.
The “castle” is magnificent, being
built entirely of Iiidiana marble in
cathedral style. Tile driveways are a
sample of what can be done with money

The road bed is cut in the mountain
side for a great part of the way. At
times on one side would be the
cipitous sides of the mountain some¬
time rising 30 ft. in height, and on the
other about the same distance down
would tie the river flowing peacefully
along. The numerous curves afforded
some fine views from the car windows.
A number of trestles across the river
serve to give variety to the pictures.
Our little party all concurred in the
opinion that this was the best yet.
We reached Knoxville about 7 P. M.,
but as time was short, and noarrange¬
ments had been made for our stay here
we went directly on to Chattanooga,
arriving about 2 o’clock Hunday morn¬
ing.
Taking a ear Sunday morning we
proceeded to the summit of Lookout
mountain, one of the most famous
spots in the Southern states. We
viewed the battle fields, visited the
many points of interest here and after
taking a last look at a scene never to
be forgotten, we returned to tin: city
and took the train for Atlanta, where
we, arrived about 10 o’clock Sunday P.
M. Here we bade adieu to the mem¬
bers of our little party, of whom I will
always have a pleasant remembrance,
and after spending a day or two in the
