Atlanta goes dry to-day.
We are glad that our old county
(Terrell) went for Gordon.

Wish somebody would .stop the
Patriot from growling about us be¬
ing so popular. Can’t some of his
Bacon friends give him a piece of
“Bacon” and bread.
A negro at Sylvania, Ga., ninety
years of age lias been buried in a

“A most unheard of condition of

the .Statesman's mind is wandering.
214 persons poisoned by eating ice
cream in Philadelphia at a picnic.
It is thought six of them will die.
From the best clue, it is thought
that arsenic was put in with mur¬
derous intent by some one.
It seems that the Gordon men in
Mr. Bacon’s audiences are begin-
ning to ask him some very enihar-
rasaing questions. His friends ad-
vise him not to answer any ques¬
tions. Gen. Gordon, on the other
hand, cordially invites the Bacon
men to pull their little catechisms
on him.
Watch for new slanders oil Gor¬
don. Watch for new tricks of the
Bacon men. Avoid “uninstructed”
tickets; vote straight for Gordon;
work hard; sleep with one eye open
and spare not an hour until the last
vote is cast and the last delegate
elected.
Any one in want of such things
can find three bachelor critics on
Whom no poor woman has ever
taken pity, enn find one in Dawson,
one in Bueua Vista and’ one in
Montezuma. As most of thfc women
are for Gordon (who is sure to win)
we can account in part for these
critics being baches, they are for
“Bacon” which means a long race
that never wins.
Cadet George F. Cooper, of

the naval school, at Annapolis, Md.,
recently graduated and has been as¬
signed to duty on the Vandalia.
Capt. Harrison,now at the Brooklyn
navy yard. On first entering the j
school George was one of a class of
65, only 2.3 of whom graduated, and ;
1»e was was 15th in his class. This i
is a pretty good showing for George
when it is considered that he left
over 60 per cent, of class behind.
There is so much truth in this:
Many a child goes astray, not be¬
cause there is a grievance at home,
hut simply because home lacks sun¬
shine. A child needs smiles as the
flowers need sunbeams. Children
ook little beyond the present mo¬
ment. If a thing pleases, they are
apt to seek it; if it displeases they
are apt to avoid it. If home is a
place where faces are sour and
harsh, and fault-finding ever
ascendant, they will spend as
many hours as possible elsewhere

Editor Enterprise:— This be¬
ing the year for the selection of men
to fill the various offices of responsi¬
bility anti trust in the state ami her
various Jcjuntlw I beg leave to
submit a few suggestions to the
many readers of your most valuable
paper, especially to those counties
composing the thirteenth Senatorial
district. President Cleveland, has
inaugurated a system of civil re¬
form has been and Is still removing
many of the Republicans from
the various offices of the govern¬
ment, who have shared largely of
the spoils of which the government
has been plundered since they have
been in power, and appointing in
their stead, men of ability, honesty
and integrity, of the ranks of the
Democratic parry. Scintillations of
a brighter day is dawning in our pol¬
itical horizon and the departed
glory of our southern liberties are
again returning and under
the guidance and control of a true
and honest democratic administra¬
tion of our government, it will in a
future day shine witii still greater
luster and grandeur, giving equal
rights to all its citizens. Now how-
are all these results to be brought
about ?
By bestowing our political and
Judicial honors upon men of houes-
ty, integrity reliability and capabil¬
ity, that these honors may be worth¬
ily worn, and the functions of each,
and ail of our offices be performed,
witii proficiency and ability that
would reflect much credit upon one
office holder of whom every citizen
should be proud. Legislative hon¬
ors for the last twenty years, have
deteiorated and faded into utter in¬
significance from the result of their
having been unworthily bestow¬
ed upon the incompetent and the
ignorant of all classes and colors.
Honors thus, bestowed would shine
with equal luster upon the head of
a mule as on these.
The time has come when a wiser
legislation is Imperatively de¬
manded. We should lay aside per¬
sonal, preferences in the selection of
men to represent us in the various
departments of our government,
and resolve in the future to place no
man in any office of honor or trust,
but those that are competent. By
looking carefully around us we will
find many to-day that are clamoring
for political honors unmertoriously.
I regard it a great presumption in
their sufferage to elevate them to a
seat in the legislative halls, of the
country, that their names might be
written in the catalogue of fame and
renown.
Of late years it seems much easi¬
er to gratify ones self for filling po¬
sitions of honor and distinction.
Elect one to the office of constable,
and if lie is successful in making a
few levies, he feels at once that
after collecting a few execution
lie ought to be consigned to a higher
post of duty. Place one upon the
Board of Commissioners of R aids
and Revenues or make him Admin-
istrator lie becomes very clamorous
for greater and higher honors and
they become so presistent there is
no way to get rid of them only to
put them in a race before the people
tor a seat in the legislature, and
them a stunning reproof
through the ballot box. \\ bile I
am opposed to the rotation system
I am not disposed to deny to Macon
or Schley counties the right to fur¬
nish a man to represent the 13th
Senatorial district in their turn pro¬
vided they give us one that is com¬
petent and well qualified to look af¬
ter, protect, and defend our nights
and interests. I am always glad
when Sumter’s time rotates for she
always gives us an honorable
and able representation that
engender a spirit of pride in the
heart of the entire constituency.
Let ’ us look well to all of
ofir public interest in the future by
placing men in our our offices of
trust and honor that will give char¬
acter and tone to our representa¬
tives by leaving the ignorant at
home in their proper spheres of
life where we are willing to award
to them the highest encomium 6r
honor, that pertain to their prop-
er spheres of life.

The Editor of the Patroit wants

leetly natural that Harp being
something of an spicure, should
crave the fruits and vegetables that
never grow in an Editors sanctum.
But it seems a little strange, that
beef, pork and mutton, cannot satis¬
fy the carniverous appetite of the

Tobacco and Cancer.
Dr. Crabtree of Boston, gives the
following testimony on tobacco us¬
ing:
“Is cigar smoking productive of
cancer?”
The answer, by every physician
of experience in mucus and blood
diseases, must be in the affirmative.
Among men tobacco using is almost
the sole cause of cancer, i have had
no little experience of this disease*
and after nearly thirty years of
careful observation I solemnly de¬
clare that I have never met with a
case of cancer of the lip, tongue,
throat or face that I did not trace
to tobacco using—smoking mostly—
as the cause, Cigar smoking
was sometimes the only way
these victims used tobacco.
Catelain, the great Parisian caterer,
died of smoker’s cancer. Dr. Liza
enumerates many cases in his ex¬
perience where smoking produced
cancer. But why go to France or
England home? for evidence found Hill? at
Where is Senator or,
worse, Why our General Grant. Why
try to hide so notorious a fact
that cigar smoking killed our great¬
est general? Dr. Douglas said
“Smoking was the exciting cause
of this cancer.” I once had a case
of a man with cancer of the lip just
where he held his cigar. 1 induced
him to leave off smoking while un¬
der treatment. After a few months
a cure was seemingly effected,when
he resumed the habit of smoking,
followed by a return of the disease.
Again he came to me, and we went
over the same routine as before.
After that he gave up the use of to¬
bacco, and had no return of the dis¬
ease. As so another case, a pipe
smoker. The lip healed, and so re¬
mained till he returned to smoking,
when the cancer returned. Not
willing to give up his pipe lie went
to a “eaneer doctor,” who applied a
plaster, and draw “drew out the cancer,”
(Can you up a well?) Soon
the cancer returned tenfold as mal¬
ignant, drawn into the wound, of
course, from ail over the system, and
the victim died in horrid disfigure¬
ment and agony.”
“Certainly tobacco using in any
form endangers the user to cancer.
Snufftakers ofter have cancer of the
nose and face. Dr. Barker (Lon¬
don) British Medical Journal,points
to 76 cases of epithelioma, or what
Buzenent calls “plaques des fum-
eurs,” of whom 71 smoked, and in
only hereditary (Hie case predisposition of the 75 was there
to cancer.
Yes cigar smoking is productive of
cancer.”—Hall’s Journal of Health.
