Judge Allen Fort called the court
l HM t Monday morning at
the usual hour. His charge to the
g rant i jury was one of the ablest
we ever heard. Up to this writing
there has not been much civil bus-
biess disposed of. The jury in the
Blackmail murder case was com-
plctctl Tuesday evening about
night. (See list.) The Jury Is a
good one. Judge Fort in his charge
intimiited that Schley county need¬
a jail, and so think we, The
present structure is no credit to
our county and should be replaced
with a new one and put further
from the court house. Among the
list of attorneys we miss the face
and form of Judge Willis A. Haw¬

attorney in Southwest Ga. He is

One of the convicts at work on
the Murphy division of the North
Carolina Western has a history that
beats anything to be found in a dime
novel.
Nearly forty years ago this con¬
vict was the most elegant gentle¬
man in western North Carolina. He
belonged to a good family, and was
well educated and refined. One day
he suddenly left his neighborhood
and went to Rajeigh. There he road
law under the Hon. James M. More-
head, was admitted the bar and soon
gave promise of distinguishing him
self in his profession. He married
a young indy of considerable fortune
but it was soon discovered that he
had left another wife at home. He
was convicted of bigamy and sent
to the penitentiary where lie served
out his term. The war (joining on
he entered the confederate army
and fought with desperation and
valor. After the war he wentnoith,
and in the character of a persecuted
southern union Man, swindled Gen¬
eral Grant, Horace Greely, Henry
Ward Beecher and other prominent
republican out of $20,000. Then lie
returned south and said the north¬
ern people had persecuted him
driven him from place to place be¬
cause he had served in the confed¬
erate ar my. This excited the sym
pathy of General Toombs, Alexan-
der H. .Stephens and others, and
they gave liberally to the poor fel-
low.
The other day a newspaper cor-
