Secretary E, B, Wilson of the Gale
City Guard addressed a letter to
Charles Atwood, manager of the
Evening Capitol, requesting him to
surrender iiis certificate ot honor-
ary membership in tho guard be-
cause • his paper had shown hostility
to the company. Mr. Atwood
printed tho letter and replied to it
at length, bitterly denouncing
('apt. Burke as a coward, and stat¬
ing; that lie (Burke) expected to
make thousands of. dollars out of
he trip of the Gate City Guard to
Europe, and also reflecting serious¬
ly on the character of Secretary
Wilson. lie refused to give up the
:ertifieate, because lie claimed that
Messrs. Burke and Wilson, ami not
the it.
Air. Wilson met Mr. Atwood on
Alabama street this morning and
lenouncefl him in tho bitterest
and daring him to light.
Atwood failed to resent the in-
-ult and walked away. Tonight the
Jate t'ity Guard held a meeting

The waters remain very high in
.Maine. The bridge piers are being
slowly undermined. All the eleva¬
tors which are run by water or
steam, itt Bangor, have been shut
down. The Maine Central railroad
officials think that they will be un¬
able to start a train for St.John
under two weeks. The washouts at
Costigau, Kingman and Maltawam-
kcog continue to grow larger.
Houses are starting from their
foundations all along tho river and
thousands of dollars n orth of house¬
hold property lias been washed
away. Piscataquis river rose twen¬
ty-five feet, making the highways
impassible. The new woolen mill
dam and the last of the great
Campbell dam at Sangervillc have
been washed away, suspending all
mill operations fora long time.
A carload of mail matter for pro¬
vincial Easter Maine and Aroos¬
took points which was forwarded
from here to Portland yesterday, to
go to East-port and-St. John, has
been returned, tiie steamer refus¬
ing to take any but tiie most im¬
portant letter mail. Storehouses
for the mail sacks will be required
if the blockade continues much
longer.

boys, aged 13 to 17 years, were
at the wharf of the Wilmington
N. G., compress, preparing to go
across Gape Fear river to shoot rice
birds. One named Grant Blest had

did not know it was loaded, While
in the act of blowing out one of the
tubes the hummer fell and one bar¬
rel was discharge!!, killing instantly

been smoked by the stove, cover
the black patches with gum shellac
and they will not strike through
either paint or kalsominc.
To clean a gilt picture frame,
wash the surface with a sponge,
lightly saturated with hot spirits ot
wine and oji of turpentine. There
must be no wiping, but the moist¬
ure must be left to dry.
To remove wine, fruit or iron
stains from linen, wet tho spot with
a solution of hyposulphite of soda,
and scatter some pulverized tar¬
taric acid upon it; then wash out
as usual. Strong vinegar can be
substituted for the tartaric acid.
The Medical Times says that a
good way to remove irritating par¬
ticles from the eye is to take a horse
hair and double it, leaving a loop.
If the object can be seen, lay the
loop over it, close tho eye, and the
mote will conic out as the hair is
withdrawn.
Lamp chimneys, if cleaned daily,
ought never to get foul. When dirty
and discolored, dissolve a piece of
soda about the size of a walnut in a
pint of warm water, and add to it a
teaspoon ful of oil of vitriol. Place
tins mixture in a shallow dish, and
leave the lamp chimney to soak in
it for an hour, turning it occasion¬
ally. Wipe it dry with a piece of
soft rag, and it will come out as
clear as ever.
