We are glad to learn that Mr.
Ben Cockrell, who has been quite
sick, is bettor again.
Do not interrupt another when
speaking.
Rev. L. R. Payne, of Macon, was
in the village this week.
A postal received from Rev. J. B.
Wardlaw, of Oglethorpe, yesterday,
reports his horse, “Bob,” still at
large. Any information
the wanderer will be appreciated.
Capt. Tom Jo8<*y, of Columbus, is

Mr. James It. Adams and family,
of Thomasville, are visiting the

We have heard much talk about
ripe watermelons, but Mr. T. It.
Strange brought to the Enterprise:
on last Saturday a fine sized melon
which was good ripe and a real
treat. Many thanks! Somebody
do us so again.
Col. J. R. Williams is on the

Capt. P. E. Taylor, of Louisville,
Ky., returned aftei several days’
visit to our village.
“Dry and hot” has been the fa¬
miliar remark for the past two or
three weeks in this section, hut
rain has cotne at last.
We regret to learn that Mr. C. L.
Peacock lost one of his fine Jerseys
last week. Many areof the opinion
that it is best to ship Jersey cattle
to this section in the winter.
Mr. Chas. P. Davis, telegraph op¬
erator at this place, has located at
Byron for the present. We regret
foregoing the pleasure of Charlie’s
presence, but guess deeper regrets
from a differeut source.
Don’t forget to suliscribe for the
Entf.rprise. You need it, if you
take half a dozen other papers.
The county commissioners have
had the old guttering taken from
the courthouse aud replaced with
new. Messrs. J. W. Sheffield &Co.,
of Americus, did the work. Other
repairs are badly needed on the
building, but the county has been
run to such heavy expense that the
commissioners think best to hold off
a while before having other work
done.

Of course, if you want the best

Captain William Allen is always
at his post of business, dealing out
to the thirsty delicious soda waters
and lemonades, cooling off “the
heated” with solid ice, as well as
watchful when evil doers might in¬
fringe on the duties of marshal of
the village.
The academy in this place stands
forth as a monument of the nickel
business, the Ellaville Reading
Club having tastily painted the
building from the proceeds of the
receipts of the club by weekly nick-
el dues. The removal of the small
belfry and building a larger one
would materially improve
the appearance of the building.
Claudie, the little daughter of Mr

Rev. W. W. Tidwell, Messrs.

Lilly Dixon, Misses Mittie

dudley left on Tuesday last for
eral days’ visit to
Springs.
Encouraging offers for the
of the proposed artesian well
been received from different
of several states. This projected
enterprise should not sleep.
The new guttering on. the court
house is a decided improvement.
We learn that Capt. Claude Dixon
plead “not guilty” to the charges
preferred against him before the
court of gentlemen and jury of la¬
dies at Knowlton’s Springs last
week. We hope the charges were
not very grave. The Captain was
in good hands, however, when the
fair sex “shall pass in judgment.”
Dr. J. N. Cheney has made decid¬

Maj. C. It. Tondee is still confined
quite sick at his home, however, we

There is never a “Might-have-

reveals to us an inner glimpse of
the wide and beautiful “May-lie.”
It is all there; somebody else has
it now, while we wait.
Nearly every lawyer, minister,
and business man takes a vacation
sometime during the year. It is
considered indispensable to the en¬
joyment of good health to have the
overworked brain and body rest a
while, but how few ever suggest a
vacation, a visit, or trip of any kind
to their wives. Although they may¬
be suffering in exactly the same
manner, the same remedy is never
prescribed. The bloom is fading
out of so many cheeks, the spirits
sinking and life becoming a burden,
when all that the dear wife needs
is what you are very careful to take
yourself—recreation. Send her to
some watering place or on a visit to
a friend, but the first is to be rec¬
ommended. The change of scene,
water, diet, etc., is almost certain to
bring about an agreeable change
in her.
There should be a full attendance
at the reading club next Friday
night. Two important matters will
he discussed—shall the club suspend
till fair—will the club continue to
aid in the repair and refitting of the
academy ?
WIIY NOT?
Now, that the Ellaville academy
is presenting such a fine fresh exte¬
rior through the generous and self-
sacrificing action of the Ellaville
Reading Club, let the friends of edu¬
cation in Ellaville make a grand
rally and finish up the interior so
much needed for the comfort of pu¬
pil and teacher A few hundred
dollars judiciously spent, will give
us a building «f which we may well
be proud. The club has helped
nobly, but those who will not help
themselves do not deserve help.
Vacation will soon begin and will
goon end. In the meantime, if we
go to work in earnest, all maybe
accomplished.
Why not begin at once.

RAISING CHILDREN.
BY DR. PARK.
Infants arc from the first more or
less complaining, and it is a mistak¬
en idea to commence pouring down
medicine, especially strong medi¬
cine, or sending for the doctor for
every ailment; we should learn to
use few a id simple remedies.
As a general rule infants are kept
too close in the house, or the house
kept too close. Keep their feet
warm and their heads cool; dress
only to suit the weather and never
bungle them up with starched
clothes. After children begin to
walk they do best without shoes,
except in very cold weather.
Learn them to help mother as
soon as they can do the least tilings,
and be sure to learn them to obey.
If mothers will be strict and learn
their cltil Iren to obey early they
will have but little whipping to do;
but be sure to use the rod i f neces¬
sary.
Children should always be spoken
to kindl. if you want them to
iearn. If spoken kindly to they
will always go quicker and with a
cheerful spirit, and when grown up
they will dare not disregard your
command
Begin,as early as they can under¬
stand wh it you mean,to teach them
there is a God to love, honor and
reverence, and that they should
never take his name in vain.
Teach them of Jesus Christ aud his
mission.
If when that son or daughter is
launched out upon the broad field
of human experiences, with the
temptations and devices of the
world, they are entrapped and go
down to degradation, do not turn
the cold shoulder to them, but with
kind words and a tender and forgiv¬
ing spirit show them that you are
in sympathy and love for them. It
wil' go a great way toward bring¬
ing them back and causing them
to turn themselves almut and ac¬
cept good advice; and* many are
thus saved from ruin.
It is a mistakeTo throw off a girl
because slie^has“taken > wrong
step. We are all human and liable
to err. It is the duty of our good
people to rec'aiin the erring. That
was the spirit our savior taught
while he was here upon earth, and
he plainly taught that we should
follow his example.
When we find any one going
astray we should use our utmost in¬
fluence to have them change about
and if pos-ible reclaim them.
IMPORTANT NOTICE.

dozen parties who tire suffering
