A few women up north, who are
seeking political honors, are mak¬
ing themselves ridiculous in their
etiorts to"have cl •ciliated literature
advocating “Worn in’s Suffrage.”
XVe have received at thisoffice quite
a curiosity in the shape of a paper
of tliis kind, published in Nebraska;
we have no use for such in tliis part
of the “Moral Vineyard.” Modesty
Is the chief charm of southern wo¬
man, and in her sphere, enrolled
in her own spotless purity, she is an
acknowledged queen, but when she
steps beyond the bounds of propri¬
ety, into the arena of political life
she loo.ses her influence forever.
TO YOUNG MEN
The loud up hill may be hard ,hut
any rate it Is open, and they who
set stoufli ‘arts against a stiff hill
shall climb it yet. What was hard
tsi bear will tie sweet to remember
. If younu men would deny them
selve >, work hard, live hard, and
save in their early days, they need
not keep their noses to the grind¬
stone all their lives, as so many do.
Let them be teetotalers for econ¬
omy’s sake. Water is the strongest
drink; it drives mills; it is the drink
of lions and hor ses, and Sampson
never drank anything else. The
beer, wine, and tobaeeo money will
soon build a house and make their
fortune.

One darkle stood in the ’Dm kor patch,
\Vnence all ihe rest had lied;
W bile mule heels, clods and green
worms flew,
A-whhtcing round Ids head.
Savory, stout anil black he stood’
As born to work a farm,
while gaping mouth and bulging eyes
Betokened ids alarm,
That mule kicked hard; ho would’nt
leave,
“Unless de boss said sc;”
“J)e boss,” unconscious of his plight,
Had goue off to the show.
The darkie yelled:“See here, boss, say;
Mus’ Ilefdis mule go?"
Just then the boss was ndles away,
And Cuffee called out “Whoa!"
Quite thick and fast a cloud of dust
Arose toward the skle,
And filled the darkle’s eyes and nose
Like flour off hotel pie.
,‘Say boss!” again poor Uuffoe cried,
“Ef 'taint mos’ time I’s gone?”
Naught but the cbdteriug hoofs replied
An the agile mule kicked on.
At last therocnine a thunderous crash
That mad® the earth resound,
And when the dust and debris passed
The mule could not be found.
That fateful, last terrific kick
Had struck on t’uffee,s head;
And now the mule a shattered wreck
Lay far off lin p and (lead.

WOMANLY MODESTY.
Man loves the mysterius. A cloud¬
less sky and full blown rose leaves
him unmoved; hut the violet which
h des its blusdiug beauties behind
the hush’ and the moon when
emerging from behind a cloud, are
to him sources of inspiration and of
pleasure. Modesty Is to merit what
-■hades is fivure in p.iinting-i* gives
b Idness and prominence. Noth¬
ing adds more to female beauty
thau modesty. It sheds around the
countenance a halo of light which
is borrowed from virtue. Botanists
h ive given the rosy hue which tin¬
ges the enp of white roses the name
of “maiden blush.” This pure and
delicate hue is only paint Chjistian
virtue should use. It is richest or¬
nament. A woman without mod¬
esty Is like a faded flower diffusing
an u wholesome odor, which the
prudent gardener will throw from
him. Her destiny is melncholy for
it terminates in shame and repe:-
tence. Beauty pass like the flower
of the albe, which bloom and die in
a few hours; but modest.X gives the
female charms which supply the
place of the trausitory freshness of
youth.

permission will give your readers a
trifling account of what was
seen and heard while there.
Just beyond Ruck Creek lies the
farm of Justice Stephen Murray.
Justice Murray bears the reputa¬
tion of being a very successful hog
and hominy producer, and a glance
at his well managed farm will con¬
vince the most doubtful! that the
reputrtion is well maintained. Mr.

OIK WASHINGTON LETTER.
From Our Rkoui.au Corks
KNT.
Washington Julj 23rd 1888.
Senator Gorman, who has Just
turned Irom New York, where
went to attend a meeting of the
tionul democratic campaign com¬
mit toe, says the deletion of Mr.
Cals in S. llrlce for chairman of that
committee Is very fortunate of the
democratic party, as he has the
brain and ability to do good service
in tiie campaign. Some democrats
in Congress had been of the opinion
that Mr. Brice lacked the experience
necessary for carrying on the cam¬
paign, but since he is endorsed by as
experienced a politician as his pre¬
decessor Senator Gorman, every
body Is satisfied.
Secretary Vitas has appointed
Rev. T. S. Childs, of this c'ty, R. B.
Weaver, of Ark., and J. M. Smith, of
Wis., as a commission to negotiate
with the Ute Indians in Southern
Colorado for their removnl to some
other reservation.
The President found it necessary
again this week to veto a number
of private pension bills. As usual
his reasons were conclusive.
The conferees ou the river and
harbor bill are in a dead lock. Th*
House conferees object to the va¬
rious canal appropriation added by
the Senate.
The bill regulate Interstate teleg¬
raphy has been favorably reported
to the Set a‘e.
The fourth annual report of the
Civil Service Commission has been
placed In the hands of ths President.
During the year there were 15,
852 persons examined; the naine9 of
10, 746 were placed on the list of
eligibles, 4,445 recieved appoint¬
ments. The report argues against
the suggestion that appointment
should be apportioned among Con¬
gressional districts, and recomends
the extension of the classified ser¬
vice to embrace the employes of
the Railway Mail Service, the field
employes of the Labor and Indian
Bureaus, and too graded elearks in
the several depots of the Quarter-
master Gene: al's Office.
There is a rumor here that Rep
reseno*ive IV. L, Scot, of Pennsylva-
nia, will decline a renomination to
Congress. I am told that the reason
is, he wishes to be free to enter Mr.
Cleveland’s cabinet next March.
It is understood that when the
fortification appropriation is re¬
ported to the House, probably next
week, it will appropriate something
like #25,000,000.
In spite of all reports to the con¬
trary, I can officially, so to speak,
announce that the President has
made no definite plans for a sum¬
mer vacation, nor sviil lie until Con¬
gress shall agree upon a date for
adjournment.
Before tin's letter is in type, the
Mills bill n ill probably have pass¬
ed the House, and the democratic
party will have officially placed it¬
self on record as being in favor of
revenue reform. The number of
democrats who voted against the
free wool clause, three, probably
represent the number which will
vote against the bill when it is put
upon its final passage.
Mr. Randall is improving slowly
and his family hope to be able to
carry him to his country residence
near Philadelphia in a few days.
The fisheries treaty has taken up
a considerable portion of the time
in the Senate this week. Senator
Pugh made a strong and sensible
argument in favor of its confirma¬
tion, and Little Billy Chandler
made a speech, composed equally
of protection and bloody shirt,
ag linst it,
A bill has been passed by the Sen¬
ate appropriating $35’00« for the
erection of a monument in Louis¬
ville Ky., to George Rogers Clark,
who captured the Northwest Terri¬
tory.
The date for the great Cleveland
and Th nr in an ratification meeting
in tliis city has been definitely set’
September 7.
The republicans of the House, by
their action in refusiug to vote,
Wednesday, on the tobacco clause
of the tarilfhill, left the House with
out quorum and caused an adjourn¬
ment, wh»n it had been aranged to
take a recess to an evening session
for the purpose of acting upou the
bills from the labor committee.
It s tielieved it was purpo el ?.
It is said the the renublican mem-
lerof the Senate committee on
finance already have printed copies
of the propose Senate tariff bill.
