There is considerable excitement
among the democrats of New York
on nccount of the split between
Tamony and fhecounty democracy,
Fears are entertained by a few,
Tina ng wlioni President Ule\eland
(hat this will Injure the national
ticket and cause the loss ot New
York State.
The great scheme which has been
set on foot by Senator Illair of pur¬
chasing Canada is causing consid¬
erable talk in political circles at
present. The democrats consider i*
nothing moie than a republican big *
»boo. There is a probability that
Canada will become a part of the U.
H. in the future but neither we nor
they are ready for the annexation
at present.
The opening of the Technological
School with examination ot build¬
ing and transfer to the State took
place on the nth. There were a
targe number of pupils on hand to
attend the opening exercises. We
predict great success for this Insti¬
tution as it is something that we
have neen wanting fur sometime.
The expositions this year in spite
of all the fever scare hid fair to have
grander displays than ever before
The directors have not stopped wor¬

Professor W. F. Slutcn superin¬
tendent oi the public schools of At¬
lanta said when asked forUus views
on whipping: “I can give you my
views in vcy short order 1 think
moral suasion should be used as
long as passible and carporal puu-
isnmnt should ho used as last resort.
There are sonic boys who have
been controlled at hotqe by fear
and if you gttinqpt hi control them
by uiqrql suasion they whip laugh at you
You either have to them or
(urn them out on the street.
“I havs been teaching nearly thir-
ty eight years and when 1 first be¬
gan I whipped a great deal but as 1
grew older I learned how t*» get
along without it and during the last
few jiave years of my teaching thirty I did not
to whip at all. in eight
years I only expelled three boys;
that was when I was i* young
man and I have always been
asliame I ot it. I don't believe in
expel liny hoys hut i believe in otii-
geueraUing them. Teachers aught
to have I ho right to p tnish in order
to keep good hoys trom beeomlng
had. There is need of enlarging
upon it; it is the result of years of
experience. 1 can mynelf got along
w ithout punishment hut little but a
teacher must have the right to pun¬
ish. Without punishment it is nn-
arc by. There i s no house of corree-
tic II. If we had one we migiit get
along without punlshni’nt, hut with
out a house of correction expulsion
is putting them on the street, mak¬
ing gamins of them and raising
them fur the penitentiary or the
gahows. In my opinion it would
min our schools to abolish the rod,
and that is not saying that Atlanta
boys are any worse than any others.
I think th>»re are some girls who
ought to he switched. There: are
some girls who have no more re¬
spect for authority than had boys.
When boys get old enough to rea¬
son and know l|ie results of rea-on-
ing then if they cannot lie controll¬
ed. 1 think they ought to lie put out
on tl\e streets. We rarely ever
have to whip a hoy |n the high
schools, I prefer controlling them
to expelling them.”—Constitution.

Desire to thank the planters of Southwest Georgia for the very liberal
patronage extended them during the past season, and to announce that
they will continue to run the

at the old stand, on COTTON AVENUE,during the coming cotton sea¬
son. The coining season promises to be a lively one, as the indications
are that it will open with a
Railroid War and FIERCE Compstition in FREIGHTS.
In order to secure for our customers the fullest advantage of this war
in rates, we have refused to enter into any combination, but will occupy
neutral ground, ready to secure the highest prices and best rates from all
parties. Qur interest is not with tip- railroads and compresses, but with
the planters, and to this end we shall work; as we always have done.
Our convenience to Die banks and business portions of the city will
give our customers every convenience tor transacting their business, and
instead of being restricted to one elqss of buyers, our customers will have
the advantage of all classes as our tables will bg upeq to gU.
Mr. S, McGarrali
who has had yours of experience in handling cotton, will again have
charge of the SALES DEPARTMENT, and with his thorough Tamilian-
ty with ill! itsdctnils lie will see that the highest prices are secured.
With these advantages, and with our expenses based upon the most
