A Familiar Letter to
; Bill Arp.
Dear William: „
We’se truly glad you’ve
come.
We expected you down here for a
long time, along about the time the
yankeet had you running all over
*'' ,(, rtU Oeorgia, and every where
e,8e where there won’t any yankees.
But we do not. consider that you
«howed u# any disrespect, for we
feel certain you would have honor*
u* with a visit, had a tew more
shells fell upDiere around you.
Come, now WUliam -I don’t mean
to say that there was no fighting
Wood in you, for 1 have nodoubt but
what there was numbers of little
weasly consumptive fellows |n the
Union army that you could have
whipped iu a fair light and that you
could have beat any that you could
not whip in afoot race. Though a
great many though that the reason
why you were running so much, was
that you was practicing with the
expectation of entering the arena
after the war to run foot races. 1
have always contended that there
Was not fun enough in fighting to
suit you and being a humorist you
just didn’t have the time. But you
performed your part well. We
were then to young to take any
part and. we were glad of it; but we
enjoyed seeing you poke old Abe in
the ribs at long taw and nearing
you sick on and holler to the boys
while you sat away on the fence.
But friend William the subject* f
this letter is about that lecture.
Some people and esoeciaily the wo*
men have quite confused ideas a-
bout it.' One old lady says she has
heard one and that you will open it
with a prayer and then say a speech
out of a book; while another thinks
it will have a material form and
will have to be turned like a com
Rut the more intelligent
class have no such ideas; yet. even
they from reading your letters have
hud what I comider- qnite a mis¬
taken impreasion formed on their
minds, which I hope you will
correct.
The women and especially the
married ones have formed the opin¬
ion that you are one of the dearest
husbands in the world and thftt Mrs.
Arp don’t have any thing to do but
to sit still and tell you what to do.
Rut yon can’t find a man that be-
lievs a woad of it.
Now I ha ve a request to make of
you. : In your lecture I wish for you
to state, that it is all a mistake a-
bout you making the fire in the
morning, washing the dishes and
winding the calf; and I want you to
specially emphasize,'that y.»u never
haverto amuse the baby, and you
consider this altogether the wo¬
man’s business. There ha» been a
big crop of them produced down
here lids year and by putting in a
liltlojof of the the right kind of talk
you will do a great favor for your
fellow man. Cotton and potatoes
are away down in the eighties but
the babies are aw'ay up in the nine¬
ties and no guano eitheir. The
drouth hasn’t’ !v»rfc ’em nor has the
supply effected the market for we
know of several young couples who
do not own over two chairs and not
a respectable bedstead that possess
one of the dearest, sweetest little
thousand dollar bab; ’a n the wot Id.
It has been some-time since I have
had to rock the craddle, but this has
offorded me no ietief, for the brats
are just the size tocause more troub¬
le than ever. Mayba you know
front experience that there isn,t
much fun in playing horse for the
little rascals ny getting down on
your all-fours and letting them
perch on your back and to cling to
your scant locks to keep from fall¬
ing off. I’ve tried to get use to it,
but I can’t. I am getting tired of
having those chaps climb on my
knees and pull my whiskers for a-
musement, while I have to grin and
endure it.
Now I appeal to you to speak
your lug disapproval of man perform do not -
such duties; but if you
then it may be necessary for me to
suggest in the public that you are
lien-pecked and you know your
bald head will go along way to
prove it.
