A good motto is sometimes a.-
cheering as the words of a triend.
Indeed it may decide fierce battle.-
of life. What is your motto?
, Toe new feature added to the ex¬
orcises of th e Reading Club wii
prove interesting and profitable.
Each member will prepare a short
sketch of some fanuus American.
The Club a Hurds to our pupils
who can attend, a valuable drilling
supplemental to school work. TLies'
biographical sk t es should b<
preparetL with great care. Socrates
siiid: “The proper study of mankind
is man.’ And I^jtigfeilow:
“Lives of great men all remind us,
We can make our lives sublime.”
The mind of a child is not iti ;■
stuteofliealtlilul development if it
does not ask questions. Don’t scold,
parents, bat answer the questions,
mutual instruction will be the re¬
sult.
Tho parent who allows a child to
go to school or not, as it likes,
should have a guardian appointed
for both. Hence the compulsory
schools of Germany.
We insert this week a selection
of the school law of Ga., showing
the source of school fund.
The present system tho,’ a pom
one, L the best that cou cl be devis¬
ed with such a meager appropria¬
tion . Judge llook, S. S. 0. and oth¬
er able aud earnest advocates 01
popular education are in favor of a
smalt nax on property, to be appli¬
ed to the school fund so that the
public schools may be better sus¬
tained and continue <> months.
.Six month at school every year
between six aud eighteen, will give
a child a good elementary educa¬
tion. A similar system works well
in Miss. We have taught 111 that
state and know that die objections
to such a system are not as great as
they seem, A good Counry School
Commissioner will administer such
a law as Mississippi lias to the sat¬
isfaction of all.
As to the fund to be raised: a
small additional tax on property
will raise the amount. To lighten
this, the cutire rental of the state
Road, instead uf half, shoe Id be giv¬
en to the school fund; also to dou¬
ble the poll tax would be equitable
and not burdensome.
A tax o i dugs would aid schools
and prove a blessing to the stale
for several reasons.
The recent large endowment of
the University or a corespomliiig
liberal amount should have b en
given to the common school fund,
Dr. Haygnoil s sermon on state
aid to education, should be printed
in pamphlet form and read by ev-
ery one in Ga. that can read: Then
perhaps the people will compel (he
law makers to act iu this matter.
