ELLAVILLE, GA. THURSDAY JULY 4 1889.
Still After Mary’s Goat,
Mary Its fleet*- hart a was little white lamb.
It as snow:
Where Strayed away one summer day,
hunt* should never go.
Then Mary gat her down
And tears streamed from her eyes;
She never found her lamb,
Because she didn’t advertize.
And Mary laid u brother John,
Who kept a village store;
Ke wut down and smoked his pipe
A nrt watched the open door.
And as the people passed along
And did not stop to buy,
John still sat down and smoked his pipe
And blinked his sleepy eye.
And so the sheriff closed him out.
But still he lingered near;
And Mary came to drop with him
A sympatiziug tear.

A Good Joke.
Dr, Smith, unintentionally, got off a
very neat little joke on the News, recent
ly. From a patent medicine dealer, he
received and distributed among his pat
rons, an advertizing sheet gotten up like
a newspaper and headed “EHaville
News.” Many, who had heard the name
we intended giving to our newspaper
sheet venture, for naturally mistook the doctor’s
the promised county paper, and
seized on to it with avidity. Eagerly
they in scanned it, column after column,
search of the local happenings, but
medicine, medicine, medicine, and lauda
lions of Begg’s family meuiesnes greeted
the eye on every page, but not one Ella
ville item. “Confound that Florida fel
low!” ejaculated one sedate old farm
er, who had turned the paper over and
over, “I don’t find a thing in his paper
about Schley county. He seems to think
we need nothing up here but medicine,
why he is even ashamed to put his own
name at the head of the tiling, umi it
hasn’t got an EHaville advertisement
even, except Doctor Smith’s. I’ll be blast
if I take such a paper.

The Columbus Enquirer Sun pays the
following well merited compliment to
Schley and surrounding counties.
“The first the shipment BuenaVista of cotton to Colum
bus over Extention was
received on the llth inst. This cotton
was shipped by Dr. Scarborough, of El
kivillei and consigned to Blanchard,
Humber – Go. The return to the city of
the business of this section is greatly ap
predated by our merchants and business
men. The fairest and among tire most
valuable sections of the state of Georgia
are the counties of Marion and Schley,
and the far mere and merchants of both
counties are among the best and most en
terprising. They know a good thing
when they see it, and they attend to bus
iu ess with both eves open.”

Too Risky.
We saw a farmer do a very unwise
thing a few days since. He was coming
into town from the direction of Murray's
Cross Roads, and was about fifty yards
from the railroad crossing wlienjae saw
the train coming at full speed. Be was
driving two'spirited boy in mules the and had a with wo
man and small wagon
him and instead of waiting for the train
to pass, as it would have done in one
dashed minute, he put the whip track to just the ahead mules of and the
across
engine. The crossing at this place is the
steepest and roughest in town and had
the mules balked or a trace broken, or
am- thing occurred t,o stop him on the
track a few seconds it would have been
impossible, engineer with hare that voided heavy running train, for
the to a li
ver him. Many a serious accident has
occurred from just such impatience aud
thoughtlessness.

The Esquimaux.
While the Esquimaux hove * far
wider range east and west than any
other race, there is much evidence
that the north and south limits of
their territory have greatly narrowed.
If the suggestion of CapL Adams,
that the Smith Sound natives, about
200 in number, be removed to south
Greenland to prevent them from en
their tirely succumbing to the hardships of
isolated home, were carried out,
the north and south range of these
natives would be still further tlimin
ished. We know that the Esqui
maux once hunted in the northern
part of Grant Land, over 200 miles
north of the present homes of the
Smith Sound highlanders. On the
other side of Baffin's bay the Esqui
Gape maux Sabine, not long where ago often went to
passed their last winter, Greely’s but party have
been heard of far they north
not so for
some years. On Banks Land McClure
found very old remains of Isjquimaux
huts, but the natives south of Banks
Land had not even any traditions of
natives people ,ving so far north, and the
of Wollaston Land, who
would bo most likely to go there to
hunt, have said they never go north
of Prince Albert sound, which is far
southeast of Banks Land. These facts
point not more to the southerly re
treat of the Esquimaux than to the
gradual j southwest extinction of the race. Even
Danish K Greenland, whore under
rule the hard lot of the natives
has been considerably ameliorated,
