THURSDAY JULY II 1889. the weekly press association. _ the Georgia Psncil Pushers Royally En TEKTAINED—A TRIP To DIFFERENT Points in North Georgia. It was my good pleasure to represent the Schley county news in the Gfeor gia weekly Press Association which con vened in Cartersville the :ird of July. Boarding the train at this place on tiie 2nd inst., I passed over four roads to reach that point: viz. The s. – w., g. m. – u., Central and w. – a., all of which, are well equipped rojtds. The Savannah and western, which has just been com pleted from Americas to Columbus, opens up a section of fine farming try and brings Birmingham and West ern markets almost to our doors, and passengers going to any point in North or middle Alabama or to Atlanta, will find the scedule on this road very con venient. Arriving at cartersville about 8 o'clock the crowd were met by a number of citi zens and escorted to the So. James, where a number of us were comfortably situ ated for two days with J. L. Maddox of the Rock Dale Banner at conyers, for my room mate. Owing to the inclemency of the weather, it was impossible for the citizens to carryout the plans they had made to entertain us, but in spite of the heavy rains, we were carried down the Etowah river on the East and west road to view some of the finest plantations I ever saw. On the 3rd at 10 a. m.. m the opera house, the convention was called to or der by Prest. Perry; after stating the object of the convefcion, he introduced Col. Douglass Wikle of cartersville, who in most choice language, welcomed the members of the Press to the hearts and homes of the people of tiiat prosperous city. Mr. Ed Young on an eloquent man ner, responded to the address of welcome in behalf of the association. After disposing of the regular busi _ ness o<. tiie day, f too tedious Mmonfinn to mention, Col. Newman presented to Mr. Roberts, coresponding ’ Secretary, a handsome gold tieAClWlGaiie , '' 11 it ; h hisnama n “. and date en upon it: donated , bv the , mmueis , of the Press, for his untiring and sue cessful effoits to make these meetings 1 both ^ 4 . 1 , proutub.e and „nil nli><>«ant pleas>«mt. Tiie country around the pi aces wo vis Red is very mountainous and tho land ou top of these hills, is certaitdy in a state of high cultivation, and is indeed an ex cellent stock and grain country. The seasons there, are about six weeks later than they are here, consequently they have to work their crops iu inid Summer, Among the hills of North Georgia, is the home of one whom the people of Schley ail know; at this home, (known as the Oothcaloga Jersey Farm.) I fared sumptiously for two days, living on the best the land afforded. This farm was started about one year ago and already they are reaping the benefits in the way of rich golden butter, for which they find ready sale in Atlanta, at 40c per pound, Leaving this place for the “Gate City” I, upon my arrival, was met by ourRep resentative, who kindly accompanied me through the new Capitol, from the summit of whose dome, we viewed the surrounding country and the city below us. Our ride on the Dummy to Grant’s Park, is worthy of considerable mention, but for lack of time, we omit. From Atlanta to Americus I was hon ored with the presence of our brother, Sid Cook, and his beautiful little niece. Here, I changed cars for the spot that is ever dear to my heart. Now when we compare the different sections of Georgia and consider her va ried and fertile soils, her numerous in dustries and her genial clime, we are ready to exclaim, in the language of Mr. Ed Young, “Oh! Georgia, thou art great but greater still, is thy future.” \v. P. H. WAR TALK IN CENTRAL AMERICA. Costn Rifi and Sicurr.gita.
